Hey guys,
i recently purchased a virpil setup for helicopter flying and i would like to ask you some questions.
So i have a T50CM3 Moongost Base for the Cyclic, together with a 200mm extension and an Alpha Prime Grip.
How do i properly set up my base in order to get a very realistic behavior of the cyclic?
The base allows adjustements for the dampeners, the cams (different cams available) and the pre-tensioning springs (light, standard, hard).
Many thanks for the support.
If all you are going to be doing is helicopter flying, you should remove the springs so there is no centering tension as helos have no centering. Difficult if you also use the stick for aircraft - you can overcome the centering with trim release and some other configurations found on the web. I use a VKB Gunfighter and had the same issues - but it’s been awhile for me, now use an AB9 which solves all those problems.
I have exactly same setup. When I fly choppers, I loosen pre-tension springs totally and adjust dampers, so that stick stay in place where I leave it. There is no need to remove springs or cams in CM3 base. When pre-tension is in max tightness, it’s possible to back up setup screws counter-clockwise something like 30 full turns. 20-25 turns are just enough.
When I want to fly fixed wing planes, I just tighten those springs. It’s like one minute job to change setup between choppers and other planes.
I am just getting into flight simming. So i didn’t buy a FFB Base yet since i want to start slow haha
What springs/cams are you using?
With pre-tension you mean the damping screws or the spring screws with the rubber cover?
I changed my setup almost two years ago, so If I remember correctly, I use cosmo cams (EDIT: CosmoSim Soft cams) and strongest springs.
Bigger screws (4mm Allen key) are for pre-tension and smaller ones (3mm Allen key) for dampers.
And is your setup like a dead stick when flying helicopters? Like that the stick stays where you leave it and there is not much force needed to move the stick?
I have the same combination. I took the springs and cams right out and slightly snugged the clutches so that the stick is easy to move but stays put when let go. This was mounted on a homemade box for use with an office chair. I now have it mounted on a SimFab chair. I can rest my arm on my lap and control the helicopter with my finger tips.
But if i remove the cam arms and springs and tighten the clutch, it feels very unsmooth around the center..
did you tighten the clutch in a way that the stick also stays where it got released when in almost endstop position? Or just around the center?
I have seen other posts with the same concern as yours about the feel around center. Yes I have adjusted the clutches for best movement around center although the cyclic will stay in place when somewhat off center. I have not really tested far off center but I have not encountered a situation where I would leave it in that position. Remember that I do have a 200mm extension.
Experiment, it’s not difficult to adjust and you may get just what you’re looking for.
