Virtual Reality - Is it worth it now?

Yes that’s a very good point about tying to the GPU.
Unfortunately I can’t seem to find a 256GB version of the Quest 3 and I have looked. They don’t seem to be selling them anymore. I will however take another look.
I have WiFi 6E so I can certainly try that first and see how it goes.
Yes I think it’s going to be the Quest 3 it does seem to be a more future proof buy.
Thanks for your feedback.

Unfortunately when they released the Quest 3S they stopped with the smaller version of the normal Quest 3. Should be able to get a used one for a decent price though.

And I agree, avoid the Quest 3s (aka Quest 2.5) and get the Quest 3. Your experience will be much better. I had the Quest 2 and it was good for its time, but the Quest 3 is a good upgrade from that. From what I know the Quest 3S has the same Quest 2 lenses but the quest 3 processor.

I’ve just ordered the Quest 3 and it’s coming tomorrow. I’ve bought new I don’t particularly like “refurbished” items.
Standby for more questions after tomorrow and thanks for your help.

I’ve got a Quest 3 running off the back of a 9800X3D and 9070XT GPU. I’d say performance (with a mix of mostly high, no ultra settings) is juuuust about adequate. Most of the time things are fairly smooth, but it can and will dip, although you’re never sure if that’s the hardware struggling or just MSFS being so badly optimised.

How does VR compare to 2D? No contest. I couldn’t go back.

Is it realistic? No. But it is immersive, and make sure you don’t confuse the two. First time I tried it was a real “wow, I’m actually sitting in the cockpit” moment and it still puts a huge smile on my face. The ability to look around anywhere with ease, whether staring at the scenery or glancing down at an instrument, can’t be overstated enough.

But, and there’s always a but. The graphics simply aren’t as good/clear as in pure 2D. That’s probably a limitation of the Quest 3, but the higher resolution headsets are significantly more expensive and my hardware is barely driving the Quest’s resolution happily so I see no point in going higher. Things will change over time, they always do, and I’m looking forward to the next iteration of affordable GPUs/headsets. But I’m still very happy for now.

My other main - disappointment I guess - concerns the feeling of “height”, or lack of. I’m in a 3D world, sure, but I often feel like I’m flying low level over a miniature scale model rather than genuinely being high up in the air. I think this is down to a limitation of current hardware where the focal distance is fixed (somewhere about 1 metre ish front your eyes), so no matter how high you are in the game, nor how small the objects on the ground may appear, that feeling of not really being that far away from what you’re seeing still persists. It’s not something I’ve noticed people talk about much.

But as I said, I still wouldn’t go back to 2D :joy:

Your GPU is more recent than mine but it’s only 16GB as well I believe. Hopefully mine will perform reasonably well also as I don’t think I can stretch to a 50xx GPU yet awhile.
I’ve been considering going VR for quite some time and after all the positives like yours that I read I’ve just got to give it a go. Excited Yeh..

Would a 5090 series card be nice to have? sure… But not necessary. I am running a 7800x3d, RTX4080, 64gb of memory, Virtual Desktop set to God Mode, and the Quest 3. In game settings I am currently running the newer DLSS 4 Profile K and getting very good performance, most settings are high / ultra with some very careful testing to get the settings just right. Of course the glass cockpits get a little smeary on the speed and elevation tape, but steam gagues look great. There is a little ghosting during certain light conditions off sharp edges, but its pretty minimal. I am hoping with the Quad views and foveated rendering coming with SU2 that I might be able to go back to TAA, but I am more than satisfied with my current settings and preformance.

I do mainly fly GA, I have not touched any of hte tubeliners for more than a few min. The largest plane I fly fairly regularly is the Beech 18 and the Cessna 404

That’s reassuring that I might get decent performance. I already use DLSS4 profile K DLAA in pancake mode. Speed and altitude tapes are smeary there too.
The problem is I’m a tubeliner flyer mainly 737 in 2020 and now the Fenix A320 in 2024 and a wannabe Inibuilds A350.
I keep meaning to start to fly more GA and maybe this will give me the kick start I need. That is if I can remember how to fly a Cessna.

2024 is amazing for Bush and GA flying! Urban not quite as much at the moment, too many tree spikes everywhere in the urban areas, but man back country bush is amazing espeically at sunrise and sunset!

Hedge hopping in the Hawk that’s a brilliant idea. I’ve also got an F !4 that needs a dust and polish that I’ve not flown for a couple of years. I’m off to bed soon and you’re getting me all excited.

What’s a good display port headset?

Just spent an hour trying to get decent performance/clarity with a Quest 3 in 2024. Makes me wanna sell my headset and now, instead of flying, I got a litteral headache.

An hour!!! I’ve been trying every day since I bought one last week. I must admit though that I do get much better results in 2020 than 2024.
I found this video very useful as I also fly tubeliners like he does but I suppose it depends how you want to fly.
