Vive Pro2 Free 10FPS boost

I’ve been trying to get decent perf out of my new Vive Pro 2 without much success, seemed like I was always locked to 30FPS or below. No matter how low I reduced the render scale etc.

So just messing about I decided to try out the Extreme 120hz mode in FS2020, low and behold it instantly went to 40FPS at the exact same settings. It runs far smoother and is now finally actually decent to use.

Obviously YMMV, but I thought I would share my experience t=& hopefully help out some other frustrated owners

Sounds like you have V-sync locked on (without additional buffering). That means you can only use even divisors of the refresh rate – 120 fps, 60 fps, 40 fps, 30 fps, 24 fps and so on at 120 Hz. At 60 Hz you get 60 fps, 30 fps, 20 fps, 15 fps and so on.

That may well be a good idea for a VR headset though.

I don’t think so?

V-SYNC is turned off in the options in FS2020 & also no other game has displayed the same behaviour. It seems unique to FS2020 for me.
Other games such as DCS perform slightly worse in the extreme mode, whereas FS2020 actually performs better.

Obviously it’s not magic and there is something causing it, might be something to do with the Vive motion smoothing. But I couldn’t get much above 34fps even with the render scale at 20% in90hz mode.
In 120 it went straight to 40fps with the normal settings and was noticeably smoother

This makes sense because you are locked at 22.5, 30, 45, 90 fps in 90Hz mode due to reprojection (90/1, 90/2, 90/3, 90/4, etc). So unless your fps is 45+ it is going to drop back to 30 at 90Hz, even when you have enough juice to maintain 40 fps. One way to double check is to look at frametimes rather than fps, using either MS dev mode or fpsVR, I bet the frametimes are the exact same either way but the 120Hz mode allows you to drop to 40 instead of 30 fps.

Yes that’s what I was thinking, but the FPS was fluctuating around 28-34fps, but mostly stuck around 30fps
Strangely even reducing the render scale to 20٪, I still had the same FPS though. I have a 5900X & 3090, so should of been able to hit 45fps with the settings that low.
Oh well atleast I’ve finally found a configuration that gives me decent performance

Will look at the frame times next time in FPSVR :+1:
