I think your CDI is slaved to GPS. You need to set it to Nav 1 or Nav 2, depending on which Nav radio you’re using.

Is the CDI purple or green? I think I remember that if it’s purple, it is slaved to GPS, but green if slaved to NAV. Post a screenshot to clear it up.

Edit:
Perhaps I should add, before assuming, that you first need to set the Nav radio frequency to the VOR you’re dealing with, and then set the bearing on the CDI. Does that make sense?

Additionally Garmin has a bunch of free to use practice head unit simulators. Such as this one. Garmin: 500 Series Simulator Updates & Downloads

This will allow you to practice using and programming Garmin units such as the GNS430/530 650/750 etc. without having to be in MSFS2020.
