VR advice for a beginner

I’d like to try my hand at the world of VR, but at the moment I can’t buy a more powerful pc. I have an i7-7700 processor and a GTX1080 graphics card.
Do you think this is enough to get started with VR? If so, which headset do you recommend? Any other advice is welcome as I don’t know anything about VR. Thanks!

Is this for FS? If so, FS is demanding software for VR so I would be wary of your system specs running in VR. My experience (4 years of VR) shows that FPS has is a big factor on VR and the user enjoyment. Low frame rates can introduce VR sickness and have a negative impact on VR experience. I have a RTX2080ti with a AMD 3950x processor and 64gb of RAM, I still have to dial back the FS sliders to reach the minimum 40fps. Are you able to loan a headset and try before making the purchase? I will say that if you have a PC that can produce a useable VR experience, it’s amazing. Even after all these years I have many ‘wow’ moments, especially in MSFS.

your cpu is ok especially if u can do an overclock (is it the K version? They oc ok, mines @ 4.5ghz). Your gpu will be your bottleneck. You haven’t mentioned ram, you need 16GB really. A used rift S might be suitable and cheap. If you want to buy brand new then u might get away with a quest 2 if you run low settings.

Thank you both for the replies and sorry if I was not accurate. Yes, I would like to try FS2020 in VR. The cpu is the i7-7700K at 4.20Ghz not overclocked (I thought the oc would cause CTD with FS2020). The graphic card is the GTX1080 and I have 32GB of ram. In flat mode the system allows me to have a fairly smooth experience at 30fps with almost everything at ultra, of course at 1080p.

A modest overclock of your cpu and gpu should be ok with msfs2020, its been ok for me. I would consider a Rift S or a Quest 2. Quest 2 is the better headset by some margin but with it being higher res requires a bit more pc power to drive it. Expect to have to lower your msfs graphics settings for vr. If u buy a quest 2 new from amazon u get 30 day no quibble refund window if u don’t like it.

Just to reassure you that your system will run vr, I went from a rift s and then to a reverb g2. Yes you will have to tweak your settings a lot to work but you cannot run at 100 resolution. I would recommend using the graphics enhancer program ( OpenXR toolkit) as that will make a big difference.
I have recently fitted a RTX 3070 which has made a huge difference.

I have a lesser system, AMD FX Octa core and GTX 1070 and love flying in VR. My frame rate runs 15 to 20 fps but I also have motion smoothing turned on to fill in the frames. I’m definitely GPU constrained. Using an Oculus Quest 2 headset.

If you fly GA or the commercial jets a low frame rate isn’t as bad. If you are doing high G turns in a performance airplane you’ll notice some. But it’s still fun. The Extra 330LT is a blast in VR with that canopy.

Biggest pain in VR currently is Windows 11. It hasn’t worked well with many headsets. Hopefully in the near future that will improve. It takes some tuning to get all the settings dialed in.

I’d need to drop a small fortune for much of an improvement. Although I’ve seen used GTX 1070 cards selling for hundreds more than I originally purchased it for. I might be able to recoup some cost.

I’m happy, but then I see people complaining how dissapointed they are with a $6K+ PC build.

I sort of found through trial and error that I was happier trading FPS for graphics quality. But dropping graphics down in the end couldn’t boost the FPS enough to make if feel any smoother.

MSFS needs things up a bit high for cockpit clarity.

I’m sure if I got used to pulling 40+ fps I’d feel different!

Thanks everyone for the information. I think I will focus on the Quest2 even if I don’t like the idea of having to create a Facebook profile.
