New to VR and loving it, mostly (when it works). In the distant past I setup some semi elaborate multi monitor cockpits with FS2004. VR changes all of that. My question is does anyone have any good resources to get ideas/tips/tricks for setting up a good VR physical environment? I’m using Logitech yoke/pedals and will mostly be flying the TBM. I have a play chair and Buttkicker coming on Thursday… any other must haves in terms of trying to create an immersive and useful environment? How about options for getting charts/EFB into the VR environment? I want to fly IFR mostly but for now haven’t figured out a good way without massively “cheating”. Finally, any third party improvements or recs on ATC? So far, it seems kinda clunky, and not all that accurate.
For what it is worth, I will tell you about my experience, and some processes and products that I have found to be helpful in coming closer to a real flying experience. In addition to my VR headset, the Honeycomb Alpha Controls are good. For convenience, I have set up Button 6 on the yoke to toggle the VR mode, and Button 5 to toggle the Toolbar. Other helpful hardware has been the Flight Velocity Trim Wheel. It is so much easier and effective than using yoke buttons.
I do have a Saitek Throttle Quadrant and Thrustmaster rudder pedals.
For ATC I am having good sucess in using the voice recognition of Pilot2ATC, especially for Flight Following situations. Nice to add on is the ATC Chatter. I added the Kneeboard Server, so the Pilot2ATC ATC grammer phrases reference docs are available to me in VR.
I recently added a Navigraph subscription, so now I have all the maps, charts, radio frequencies, flight planning, etc. right there in the VR mode, accessible via the toolbar.
With all that, and some good luck, I can plan and execute a flight while in VR, without breaking the immersion. It is a good experience.
I have a Navigraph subscription too, but for more casual use and easier start up, the new Sky4Sim iPad like app is a really good and inexpensive add on, especially for VR. Check it out here:
Thanks to you both. Navi graph looks like a must. I was seeing that the Working Title G3000 mod will natively display the Navigraph charts as well. I’ll have to read up on that and subscribe.
