VR implementation poor

Performance is one thing I’m willing to give them a little more time on, for sure there are areas that need special optimisation for VR usage and hopefully they’ll get to that later on. 30FPS is (IMO) the borderline for a smooth experience in a Flight Sim, for a Racing Sim it’s 90FPS and no less and I never use any reprojection in either (don’t like it). Generally I aim for mid thirties with MSFS and that seems just fine, I can fly for hours with no problems, I get the occasional stutters but see above about optimisation.

May main issues with VR lie elsewhere; Fact is not a lot has happened in the first year, SU5 & SU7 regressed the experience by bringing in new Bugs & Issues that have still not been dealt with efficiently nor quickly enough. Bugs still remain from the first Update for VR, practically nothing has been worked on other than the inclusion of VR Controller Support which by all accounts isn’t very good and no doubt a reason for the Mouse in VR Toolbar bug being introduced in SU7.

So where do MS/Asobo go from here? Well in a Q&A some months back they claimed they want to look into VR more in the coming year (2022), I’ll believe it when I see it. They have much to do, just like the SU8 “House-keeping” it’s going to take more than one update to firstly fix the partial mess they’ve made of VR and then to actually bring in much needed features & improvements.

With the Navigraph 2021 Survey showing that VR users are continuing to rise and that MSFS has a vast share of overall users, it’s plainly obvious (to me at least) that this is one area that MS/Asobo really need to concentrate on and get right. Don’t just bolt out a band-aid patch and walk away like we’ve seen in the past, actually make an effort in making the VR experience one to behold and not one that has been blatantly rushed and largely ignored as it has been up until now.

Don’t get me wrong, when VR works it is very good, but it could be so much better with some time and attention paid to it, what we’ve got now is clearly something to tide us over…which is over a year old and it shows.
