VR observation: startup proces matters a lot

I know this has been touched on before, but I thought it relevant to post anyway that the order and process of starting VR makes a big difference in the performance.

I’ve previously posted my observation that changing the in game render scale can reset bad stutters. I’ve also seen cases where this didn’t work.

Specifically, when switching from VR to/from 2D while flying i often find the performance in VR can completely tank, down to just a few fps, so the order and method of starting VR is really important for performance.

Mine is:
Plug in headset - WMR starts automatically
Start MSFS
Setup flight
Wait for loading screen finished
Switch to VR (ctrl + tab)
Click “Go fly” to start (in VR)

Using this method I’m very happy with my VR flying. I suspect just the 3 last steps matter, but included the full process for completeness.

My setup for reference:
5950x / 3080 / 64gb / Reverb G2
OXR 100 / TAA 100 / repro off

I hope this helps someone.

Thank you for summarising this so well. Much appreciated. I will try it out later on today and report back if I encounter any problems (which I do not anticipate, I hasten to add).

For reference, here’s my previous post on “resetting” by switching render scale to another value, then back. Generally I’d recommend not switching VR/2D during flight, but if you must and get stuck, this might help.

Makes zero difference here. I can exit and enter VR without issues at any stage. i also mapped a VR enter/exit key to my alpha yoke.

Huh - interesting, thanks for the info.

Well, I guess if that’s my “short straw” in this MSFS lottery of performance then I shouldn’t complain given that’s it’s largely avoidable, and flying works well for me… :joy:

This is the only way I can get mine to work. Then, if I exit VR and try to go back in my oculus link crashes and I have to exit oculus app then kill all 3 of my OVR processes in task manager then restart Oculus app then restart Link. Driving me bonkers to say the least. I’m thinking I’m having usb issues with my motherboard.
