VR Real Performance in MSFS 2024

A lot has been said so far…but do we have any indication by numbers on how MSFS 2024 compares to 2020 ? What is the real difference that the new enhanced multicore engine will make for VR users. Will we be able to ditch Smart Smoothing aka ASW ? Will the sim run at 90fps in line of most headsets refresh rate ?

I suspect we may see a very small drop in performance/ fps with the better visuals and additional complexity of the sim, but with a smoother experience overall.

Smart Smoothing works best whatever sync point your VR headset requires. So, if I find myself hitting 80fps in my Index, I’ll leave it on.
I do agree with TonyDarkZero, this will likely be an upgrade to the visuals and that means it could be a wash for performance.
I didn’t see the Beta, so I can’t say for sure. The future of flight sims is multi-threading, and I’ve read that this version was built with VR in mind.

90fps…unlikely, at least not at an acceptable level of visual fidelity. Stable 72fps should be very doable with the new x3Ds, a 5090 and some tweaking (including DLSS).

There has been little to no information on the performance of VR in MSFS 2024. It has been nothing but generalities about VR becoming a platform in the sim. Whatever that is supposed to mean.

My suspicion is that performance will be similar to the current sim.
The new one still has to run on the same generation of Xbox hardware, so hardware requirements cannot increase hugely, otherwise it wouldn’t work well on Xbox.
We may even see some improvements due to better use of multi-core CPUs.

We have been promised a massive performance increase…overall. That’s for sure. I am not sure however if that refers to VR as well and it is concerning that so far that we did not get any conclusive testing results. O well, let’s hope for the best as my credit card was charged yesterday for my purchase.

I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard ‘massive’ mentioned in any of the Q&A live streams

XBox don’t do VR at all (AFAIK), so both PC and XBox version don’t share any common code on that topic, nothing.
So one don’t have any influence on the other one IMHO (of a game dev).
In other words code optimized on PCVR are not meant to appear anywhere on the XBox code. The multi core enhancement promised to MSFS2024 will benefit both devices, but VR it’s another PC only story.

But I did …in the initial presentation msfs2024 announcement. Will try to look for the link and post here

There was massive improvements to the calculations of the flight model. I think up to 100x. It’s never been stated that fps would be massively improved. I don’t think anybody is expecting a massive improvement in fps because the graphical fidelity would also have increased, and why would Microsoft make such bold promises anyway given the depth and breadth of hardware.

The best I think we can hope for is similar performance with more consistent stable frames. Of course if you would reduce the graphical output to that of MSFS 2020, then you could get better performance, but for many technical reasons that may not be possible to do accurately.

Not much. In fact I’ll go so far as saying it will have zero effect on improving VR.

If you’re using it today, and it helps, you’ll want to continue to use it.

If you’re getting that today, then, sure, it might be able to. If you can’t do that today, no, not until you get an nVidia 7090.

BTW, I have a bridge I’m sure you’re going to be interested in purchasing. Just imagine the money you’ll make from the tolls.

Let`s worry about it when we cross that bridge then
I got myself a MOZA AB9 FFB Base last night so I cannot afford the bridge now :upside_down_face:

IMHO, Microsoft are ‘Quantity over Quality’.
That’s been true since the first Windows on 3.5" floppies.

What strikes me about MSFS 2020 is the game has demanded more expensive hardware over the four years of running.
MS & Asobo will be facing a situation where it becomes an Elitist product.

Only those with plenty of spare cash will have the 2400 x 4800 pixel VR equipment to appreciate it in full.

What % of MSFS purchases have lasted 3 months on the owners machine?
What % of purchases were abondoned because updates rendered their equipment sub-standard for the latest modifications?

What % of purchases were ‘Serious Simmers’ and not 15 minute wonder Gamers?

What % of purchases are now in the Recycle Bin?

Do Microsoft care as long as the thing is bringing in money?

What is a bit frustrating is the fact that so little has been said in terms of real performance pre-release. It would have been interesting if not just frames but other aspects as quad views and eye tracking are implemented in this edition.

I politely disagree. If anything they are expanding their reach.
Plenty of people are enjoying MSFS on mid-level PCs with appropriate settings and even more do so on the $499 XBOX Series X.

Please point out another flight sim that produces the same or better level of graphics quality.
And, if you can find such a thing, show me how it does it on lesser hardware.

Jorg mentioned some time ago that quad views was either coming after release or was being looked at, I can’t recall his exact words.

There are so many variables, and a wide variety of user experiences (and many may be the opposite of mine) however I have always had a much better VR experience in DCS, even in the newer modules and maps that look amazing. And in DCS, changing the graphics options actually affects performance positively or negatively, unlike MSFS 2020. The latter has been nothing but constant stutters and frustration since the beginning. In DCS I can actually have a good experience. I’m hoping for the same in MSFS 2024 finally, but don’t have my hopes up just yet.

Unless you specifically heard him state this in one of his many interviews I think this is a rumour started by a YouTuber at the launch event, it seemed to get some traction in the community, however the YT has since gone very quiet on the subject.

You may well be right. Like I said, I can’t remember, I just have this vague recollection of quad views being mentioned quickly in passing, I think by Jorg. There certainly has been very little mention of VR so far. Hopefully we will find out more after the release.
