VR Reprojection and propellers

Hi guys, I’m new to MSFS. I’m having a big problem with single-engine propeller planes. The propeller makes a nasty mess with reprojection. I see that this issue has persisted for a while, and while there is no setting to tweak in the game to switch to VR friendly propellers, the community has made mods that work extremely well.

I’ve been using these mods for about a week with the Gamepass version of MSFS and I’ve been really enjoying it. I decided my system is adequate for VR enjoyment in MSFS, so I bought the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS in Steam and upgraded to SU10. Now the prop mods in my favorite planes no longer work.

Is there anything that can be done? My favorite planes are bush planes, and the prop mod no longer works on any of the cub variants. It still works in the 152, but I really wanted to try the bush activity with the yellow cub, but the propeller in VR looks ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!

I deleted the Gamepass version of MSFS, and installed the prop mod in the correct location for the steam version. I just don’t understand why the mods work in some of the planes but not the cubs.

I’m very disappointed. I really only bought this game to fly around in the cub. The game looks phenomenal in my Index in any scene where there’s not a propeller in the frame. Once a propeller gets in there it looks like garbage. Whatever the creators of IL2 have done with props looks fantastic. It’s sad that props can’t look as good in MSFS. I’m regretting my expensive purchase.

If any of you have any advice that can help get the prop mod working, I would really, really be grateful if you’d share it. Thanks!

I can’t offer a direct solution to your problem, but I know of several scenarios where the combination of SU10(Beta)+Community Mod has had problems. (e.g. AIG, which used FSX resources from the previous work).
SU9 and SU10 are only one number change, but they have many changes and existing mods may not work (and some cases).

Also, I don’t think the community mods are actively recommending SU10 (Beta) yet.
It may be painful, but reverting back to SU9 is a way to go. (If it works with SU9, then you can be sure it was an SU10 issue)

SU10 (official) will be officially released sometime this month or so.

(It may not be directly related, but there was also a case where a mod involving fly-by-wire on my favorite F35 stopped working: the F35 did not use fly-by-wire as standard, but now does, so both author=FBWoff Mod=FBWon, which was on, so I think the modes of operation conflicted. Since FBW is now supported in the standard, I removed the mod.)

I don’t know how proficient you are with the Photoshop, but if you are, its pretty trivial to change the texture yourself and fix the prop for any plane you want.

Not sure if these mods still work…

I use this one, as it seems to have lots of 3rd party ones and is regularly updated as well.

@KanadeNyan Very interesting information! I was unaware SU10 was still in beta. I thought because it was in the marketplace it was officially released. What further convinced me of that was I was able to “opt in” for beta versions in Steam, and it downloaded a big update, which killed my performance. I unchecked the opt in function in steam and it killed MSFS, and I had to perform a full reinstall of MSFS, which is tricky with Steam. When I would “uninstall” MSFS in Steam, it would seem it just uninstalls the launcher, but the core game remains. I simply deleted the core file in Roaming, which I’m sure is not the right thing to do, but I got it to reinstall properly after that.

I will gladly downgrade to SU9 if it will fix the prop mods, so I’ll give that a try. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I appreciate the help.

@notsofearless, the Multi Pass is the one I’m using. I see it supports lots of addons already, which is great. I can’t wait to try some of them.

@Vulfy550 Thanks for the advice, I’ll look into that.

@KanadeNyan If I may, I’d like to ask you one more question. In the Marketplace I can find all of the Sim Updates. Must I install them all, or are they cumulative updates? Can I just install 9 and get all of the benefits of the previous updates?

The Marketplace contains the World updates which are not mandatory.

The word is very confusing, but what is available in the Marketplace is “World Update”. It includes high-definition buildings and manually configured airports for each region. There is usually no beta version here. Of course, it will work with SU9 (the current, latest version of SimUpdate).
It can be introduced and removed from the game at the user’s discretion.

SU is “Sim Update” and is an improvement on the core functionality of MSFS2020. Currently the latest version is SU9.
SU10 is available as a beta version.
It has quite a lot of changes and is updated about every week, which makes many beta users happy and sad.

I’m not running the beta. I tried that last time and ended up having to reinstall the game. So when it becomes the official release, I’ll check all the planes and see why the cub stopped working. They might have changed file names or how the cub prop is modeled. Devs do that sometimes.

That’s great! I’m glad you stopped by, I was going to contact you directly on the website where your mod is located, but I was waiting until payday so I could “buy you coffee” through the link first instead of making these requests free! Just a head’s up, the C152 prop mod only works on the default livery that automatically loads, when I select a different livery it reverts to the default prop. I think it’s the same with the 172s.

I don’t think I’m running the beta either. I tried using it but had to reinstall. I did download World Update 10, would that change the planes?

Thanks for clarifying that. I installed the beta through Steam by clicking the “opt in to beta” box or whatever it’s called and had immediate issues. I then reverted by unchecking the opt in box but it completely broke the sim, it would crash when launching. I wonder if there is some remnant of SU10 in a file somewhere that is causing problems. Uninstalling the sim with Steam is kind of weird, it just uninstalls the launcher. I had to find the folder with the 100+ MB core game and simply delete it, which I’m sure is not great.

Oh well. I’ll try messing around with the prop textures in Gimp later, I hope I don’t destroy my current installation, I’m running out of download data!

Thanks for all the help my friends.

Thanks for the heads up. If a livery has its own prop textures (like for painted tips), I have to include mods for those also. Usually I check when I do a new plane, but I could have missed one, or they updated it, in which case I’ll have to go back and add em.

I’ll check the 152 and 172 later this weekend.

Ok. Yeah. They changed the 152 model (not sure when). I added the new textures for the liveries…they each had their own prop textures. Of course, if you use a different custom livery and that livery has it’s own prop texture, you get whatever that dev put in there.

Usually, a livery doesn’t have prop textures…just the paintjob unless the prop also gets a new paint job. For whatever reason (Asobo) they included prop textures in the liveries, even though the prop was the same.

New version is up on the site. Thanks for letting me know. I rarely fly the 152, and if I do, it’s the JPLogistics mod (recommended).

Absolutely. Did you see why the Savage Cub and Shock Ultra aren’t working?

Well, I can’t successfully open the prop files in Gimp, so I have no way to substitute the textures. Very few in BufortTX’s Multipass pack work, and none of the ones in the other recommended packs work. I guess I’ll just have to hang up the VR goggles. Too bad. Thanks for the help, guys.
