right now Im searching for a 4090 @ebay. As its pretty expensive I do have a question: Will the resolution increase when I buy a 4090 compared to a 3090? I owe a 3090 and Im really interested what the difference will be. Running right now a i7-7700k, but will Upgrade to an 7900x3d. Headset is a Pimax 8kx.
I can’t speak about the Pimax 8kx, but I can definitely speak about the G2. I went from a Radeon 6800XT (roughly the same as a 3080, so less that your 3090) to a 4090. In doing so I had enough GPU grunt to either increase the FPS by a fair margin, but not really enough to get a stable native 90FPS with high settings and sharpness, or I could forsake the FPS and go for sharpness instead with most settings on high or ultra.
The difference was amazing. With a 6800XT I had to run it at about 80-85% resolution in the Toolkit to get both an acceptable framerate and good clarity. But with the 4090 I can oversample the resolution and achieve exceptional sharpness in the sweet-spot of the G2, almost like a Varjo Aero (screen door effect aside). I can either set the resolution override in OpenXR tools to 160% (or higher) or use the Toolkit to run it at 4,400 by whatever, plus CAS sharpening and get clarity I only wished for before with the 6800XT. With this res override I use MR plus DLSS Quality to run at a stable 1/3 native (30fps) to achieve the 90Hz of the headset. I could use 1/2 MR at 45FPS in rural areas, but it’s iffy in many photogrammetry area on my 5800x3D rig.
Screen door effect and narrow sweet spot aside, it was an amazing increase in clarity both of scenery and the cockpit.
The only thing that the 4090 really gets you is DLSS Frame Generation. You should be able to get more value out of your 3090.
You ask about whether the “resolution will increase” but that’s confusing. That’s like asking if a 4k monitor will become an 8k monitor if I buy a 4090. The answer is no, the resolution is not variable above the 4k per eye that you have with the Pimax. In other words, you can’t get more pixels in the lenses.
There definitely will be an upgrade in the resolution. Not necessarily in FPS, though.
This is also how I went about it when I was upgrading from a 2080ti to a 4090 - at some point no matter the GPU you will be bottlenecked by your CPU. The new 4090 will help you to unlock this “CPU-bottlenecked” FPS and if any power is still left, it will allow you to supersample.
In my case, I am running a HP Reverb G2 on a i9-9900k and am able to supersumple to 4468x4372 pxl.
Check perhaps this post as it still may be helpful for your case.
This a question of personal preferences, hard to answer.
Both CPU should work fine with an 4090 at high resolutions with almost similar results. While there are advantages for the 7900x3d on lower res the differences become marginal at 4k and above.
ME always prefer Intel for ease of use after an bitter chapter with the other team but ME is no standard .
7800x3D is now considered by many reviewers as the best choice for the MSFS2020 due to:
benefits of 3D cache for MSFS2020 (3D cache not available in Intel CPUs),
easier core management vs. 7900x3D and 7950x3D (smaller number of cores in 7800x3D, all cores benefiting from 3D cache, no need for complex core management, but worse performance for productivity apps optimized for multiple cores),
way lower power consumption vs. Intel (air cooling good enough)
