I’m a simple guy so I haven’t gone too much into it but I thought I’d share a couple of findings (5800x3D, 4090, Reverb G2).
WMR - there is a thing called Virtual Display Preallocation, where several virtual displays get created when you start the headset. There is a way to turn it off in reg edit. It had a HUGE impact on my frames. Just search it in you tube. Let me know if you can’t find the video about it.
SMOOTH MOTION vs GFX FIDELITY - I’ve always focused so much on the highest settings I can get and the upscaling and resolution boosting etc. Recently I decided to preference smoothness over image quality and lowered everything until I could lock at 60fps (no MR cos I hate it). I then slowly increased a few things and bumped up customised render scale in OXR until it started impacting frames and then reduced it a bit (now at 150%).
I’m sure I should be over riding resolution and all that, but I am pretty happy. The 60fps smoothness is so amazing and I think I prefer it to the Crystal clarity, especially in the big birds. The 150% still looks good, but more importantly, I can look around without any stutter whatsoever.
No matter what hardware you’ve got, I reckon give it a try - preference frames over visual fidelity and see if you like it better.
HEADSET vs GPU - I spent the longest time thinking I needed to buy a Varjo Aero or Pimax Crystal to get a nice image, but I’m glad I got the GPU instead. If you’re making a choice between the two, go for the GPU. I was surprised to see how good the G2 can look with a good card behind it.
5800x3D - Don’t sleep on this chip! It is powering my 4090 happily in msfs and Cyberpunk. Can’t recommend it highly enough. It allowed me not to have to upgrade to AM5 just yet. Great value for money.
I second this: invest in GPU first, then consider higher resolution headset (Crystal or Aero). Otherwise your you will still need to artificially limit the headset resolution to have decent FPS.
The sad truth is that the proper GPU for VR and MSFS is 4090, a lot of money for a hobby.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your setup. I struggle with flickering at 60hz on G2 and it is independent of reaching 60fps. Not sure what in my G2 causes this but I’ve not overcome this problem.
Currently I run DLSS Quality with near everything on Ultra with my 5800X3D and 4090. As of late, in my round the world trip, I’m not even running MBuccia’s Toolkit. I run OpenXR Tools for Mixed Reality on 1/2 and a scale of 200% so MR at 45fps. The Sim TLOD and OLOD is 155. maps on google with High LOD.
I flew for about 2 weeks on TAA recently, having to dial back Sim settings to get 30fps MR. I am back on DLSS Quality now with Sim pushing ultra and TLOD 155 OLOD 155 and OpenXR Tools for Mixed Reality at 200% and 1/2 MR. No Toolkit at this time. I may toy with colors and such but OpenXR tools does a great MR job when you find cities to adjust down to 30fps MR on a moment’s notice.
Personally DLSS does a better job on horizon and distance and TAA does better in Cockpit. DLSS Quality does so well in cockpit with scaling and raw sim output, that I find DLSS a better choice overall for these FPS figures. 45FPS is a crisper flying experience than 30fps and you need DLSS to get there, while keeping sim details.
If you are on G2, consider running OXR Toolkit just to have Fixed Foveated Rendering, this should give you +5 FPS, or higher headroom to always stay above 45 FPS for reliable 1/2 MR. You will rather not visualy notice that FFR is enabled, as the G2 is not so sharp outside the sweet spot.
I have actually noticed that if I pull the headset a little further down on my face then I find it better because the sweet spot is then easier to move between the cockpit and the outside world. If it sits too high then it takes a larger head movement to tilt down to the cockpit. I have found experimenting with position on the face very useful with G2. Also getting used to moving the head rather than moving the eyes as much has made a big deal of diff once I got used to it.
yes rivatuner is locked at whatever I aim for. That said when it drops from 45fps MR with Riva at 45, I don’t see any ill-effects of Riva tuner being out of sync.. say 30 to 45.
Oh sorry, I see what you mean. I thought you were saying you had turned the headset down to 60hz. Hmm, I wonder why you are getting that effect. I will let you know if I come across anything in my travels that may explain this.
