VR Shaking while resting on desk

I have been struggling with my Reverb G2 all year. I love VR so much that I have sunk way too much dough into upgrading my system into a goddam beast and I could write a PhD thesis on all the different settings.

But tonight I noticed something.

I was doing my usual evening settings tweaking session. The headset was sitting on the desk and I realised that the image on the monitor was moving ever so slightly, despite the headset being completely still. I did a number of tests placing the headset in different places, switching lots of settings about and seeing if I could remedy this unstable image. I couldn’t make it stable. I think this is a clue. For some reason, the image is not holding stable in the headset. I can’t for the life of me work out why. I even installed a USB C with its own controller so the USB C cable would have its own controller separate from all the other USB devices! Honestly, it’s just such a ■■■■ nightmare!

I just thought I see if this headset sitting still and untouched, yet the image moving about a little, rings any bells for anyone.

It’s an issue with WMR in Win11. It can be mitigated with MBuchia’s toolkit (shake reduction setting).

If you have a spare drive you could try booting into a fresh Win10 install and see if the image is solid there.

It’s one of a multitude of reasons I went back to Win10 on my VR machine and stayed there.

Thanks for your response!. Goin back to Win 10 is one of the things I haven’t tried. I am new to Windows as of this start of this year (installed it for MSFS, but now get into a bunch of games), so an OS rollback seems pretty daunting. I didn’t know I could boot off a USB of Windows 10. I have another 4TB SD in there just for all other games and software, could I partition off some of that to install Windows 10 perhaps?

Re shaking reduction, I have been using it to great effect over this year to stop that heartbeat effect. I actually have a little tremor from a disease I have, so the shake reduction set to 30-40% is a marked improvement, but this issue is different. I have tried with the HMD sitting still on the desk with shake reduction set both on and off. The movement isnt huge but is enough to be unpleasant, ja little fwd and back and side to side. If I then put the headset and look around, it ends up with a little jerk at some point.

Tracking seems like the most obvious culprit, but I have done all the things everyone suggests on all the forums regarding setting up and managing tracking correctly.

For me, the new realisation was that it is unstable even when the headset is sitting still on the desk.

A workaround - cover 2 of 4 G2 tracking cameras, and the shaking should stop. Don’t ask why…

First rule of flight club - never ask why!
Thanks for the reminder. I think this one rings a bell but I don’t think I ever gave it a go!I will try it when I get back from work tonight and report back. Thanks again.

Try clearing the WMR environment data

This sounds like a seperate and new issue from the Win11 shaking

I clear the enviro data and reset the boundary every time I start a session. Thanks for the idea!

It’s less of a shake and more of a sort of instability. Like a floating with the odd jerk.I will record it later and post here.

It sounds like it isnt tracking or the pc isnt getting good tracking data from it, I think some whiskey and an evening of troubleshooting is ahead

If you can stomach it, a clean win10 install booted off a spare partition just to rule out software weirdness would be my genuine first step.

Yeh, I agree, it really does sound like tracking. Dedicated USB controller, brightly lit room, cable well secured along side of headset and into computer, no hot spots (I specifically bought a light strip to bounce off the roof so it would be diffuse and even without the strip being visible to the headset), clearing the data and setting the boundary every time……there really isn’t much left to try!!! I will try the Windows 10 install and also covering two of the cameras.

Covering 2 cameras requires 10 seconds. Reinstalling Windows 10 requires hours.

I tried covering the side cameras and then the front cameras but it didn’t achieve anything unfortunately. I have spent the afternoon trying to improve my results and sort out the problem. I’m back to thinking it’s a lighting problem. Had to stop for some irl issues so the endless tests shall continue! Maybe the new update will solve all of our problems and VR will be everything we have always dreamed of!

Most likely lighting. Delete the environment data in WMR so it will save the room from scratch. Do this if lighting or the room changes. If we have a rack standing behind me to dry our clothes I usually have to reset the tracking data or it will go crazy. The G2 does have really bad tracking unfortunately but keeping the light at a medium intensity and the room steady does help a bit.

Ok great thanks. Yes I delete the enviro data before each setting, but I must admit the light has been a bit inconsistent. I agree, I’m starting to think the lighting is the culprit,

Too much is bad, not enough is bad, too. Avoid direct light like a spotlight on you. Good luck!
