VR/Sim noob is getting frustrated

I really, really just wanted to install msfs, plug in my honeycombs and rudders, link my oculus 2 and practice my instrument approaches. That’s all I wanted my flight sim to do. After 4 months of having to download multiple different apps, figure out which random settings had to be tweaked, building a new computer, having the VR work for a flight, now I can’t do anything with the oculus quest 2. it works fine navigating my desktop. but, if i turn on MSFS or the other sim, it goes to random black borders, super slow frame rate, etc.

my desktop: i9 13900, 3080ti, 32gb (5600) ram. wired internet connection. using link cable for quest2. ms store version of msfs

I don’t want to have to watch 47 hours of youtube videos, call my local college for an IT degree. I just want my stuff to work.

This message could more or less have been written by me just a couple of days ago. I’ve been so incredibly frustrated with getting MSFS2020 to work in VR, and that the “solution” to the problems always is so advanced, something that isn’t the case for any other VR game (or is there a forum somewhere full with advices on whether to turn on setting x in program y to get Half-life: Alyx to run smoothly)?

With that said, here comes yet another tip for something to install :upside_down_face: Do you have Virutal Desktop for the Oculus Quest 2? If you do, I would highly advice you to try out the latest version (which is discussed here), and turn on the Snapdragon setting.

I was just about ready to give up on flying in VR for a couple of years and now I’m instead planning all the flights that I want to do. It’s that good, at least for me. I also come from using Oculus Link with a USB cable before.

Welcome to flight simming! This has been the culture of flight sims since the beginning. I know it’s not ideal. I think if it just worked, the community would find a way to break it just so they could fix it again. I don’t have the Quest, so I can’t help, but hang in there. Once you get sorted it’s so worth it.

I feel your pain. About a year ago, I went through weeks of searching, setting up, tweaking, getting frustrated, etc… before I found a good combination of settings and a couple of tools that really make my VR experience amazing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t just work out of the box for many of us. And there is a learning curve. I did a video to try to help others that are in the same position. Your PC is similar to mine (your CPU is actually more powerful). I have an i9-9900k overclocked to 5.0ghz and a 3080Ti… so maybe this will help you out. I use the Oculus App (not virtual desktop or steamVR), the oculus debug tool and openXR toolkit… those tools along with the proper settings should give you a great experience. And this is only 13 minutes, not 47 hours  Hope this helps or at least provides a starting point. DM me or post back here with any questions. If you are on Discord, that’s the best way to get help… discord link is in the vid description.

Getting in to flight simming is kind of like buying an old classic car. When everything is running great and you just spent the afternoon polishing her, it is a sight to behold. Unfortunately it seems for every hour you drive the old girl, you have to work on it for a full day or more. Flight simming can be one of the most frustrating hobbies and can be one of the most rewarding, often taking place in the same flight. LOL

 great analogy! I think I spend more time trying to hone settings, learning new aircraft systems, re-learning aircraft systems on aircraft I haven’t flown in ages, re-tweaking things, trying out new plugins/utilities… anything other than actually popping in to VR and flying  But, to me, that’s part of the fun of the hobby!

When using the VD, do you still use the link cable or go wireless?

A complete setup guide forbusing VD would be awesome.

It’s not possible to use the link cable (other than for charging) while using the Virtual Desktop app. It always connects via wi-fi.

If you have questions, you could start a new thread and send me a PM. I’ll try to answer any questions you have.
