Hi. Was so excited to use the VR update. Had used Flyinside for FSX and Aerofly 2 with oculus rift Cv1 with old pc i7 gtx 1080. Now with new pc I9 10850k, 32 GB ram, RTX 3080 firecuda ssd. Running great in 4K mostly Ultra settings. In VR in my new Valve Index the sim stutters, gives me really low FPS (I was getting 40-50 in 4K).
The feeling of immersion is great, but the sim just looks horrible .
I followed advice on this site for optimal settings, but I am so disappointed.
Curious about others experience. Thanks
I just flew my first real flight with the index powered by my 1080ti. Not perfect but flyable. I expect a massive jump once I receive my 3080ti
Don’t set your expectations too high, switched from a 1080TI to a 3080, I have great results in all of my games except for MSFS2020. The sheer power of the 3080 does not translate to much in this sim. I moved from GPU bound to Limited to Main Thread (CPU core) . I was able to up some settings but not by much. I would say at this time a GPU upgrade for this sim would not be a great idea.
Same here, I wonder if the problem is the Index itself. They mention HMD by name except for the Index that they refer by Steam VR HMD. They also mention on a support page the HMD they tested with and the Index is MIA.
Maybe the sim will get some further optimizations for other headsets.
I still have my Rift S. Will test with that tomorrow and report here if the experience was any better
Thx for the heads up. I will see. I need that 3080ti anyway independently of msfs
I’m in a quandary in that I’ve been so excited about doing this in VR with my new powerful rig and valve index , but after getting used to 4K with ultra settings at 50 FPS , I can’t decide if prefer these amazing graphics from this sim on a great monitor or be immersed in VR . Anyone else?
I am seeing the same experience with a Vive Pro, RTX 2080, and an I7-8700. Tried a bunch of settings, but the only way I can get more than maybe 10 FPS is putting all the settings at their lowest. This game on flat screen works great, but in VR it’s far worse performance than X-Plane on this hardware.
Odd thing tonight . I flew around Providence, RI NOT in VR and it looked great, then halfway thru the flight I switched to VR mode and put on Index and it looked so much better than this afternoon when I flew over Vancouver , starting in VR. All the buildings looked HORRIBLE. As if Photogrametry was off, which it wasn’t .
Then leave tonight, after Providence, I flew over New York City. As I approached from New Jersey, the skyline was really bad, very generic buildings. As I got close , everything started looking much better. I think that’s an issue with object level in detail on the index having to be much lower.
I am wondering if the problem with Vancouver this afternoon was too much internet traffic, with everyone trying the new update.
Tonight the FPS was not terrible in VR, but looked decent.
Another thing…sorry so long… is when I switch back from VR into regular mode, I get maybe 5-10 FPS. I have to exit out and restart to go back to my 40-50 FPS.
Thanks for reading. Would love to hear more from others
Rift s is amazing… words just cannot describe the experience I had today… I was there.
That’s awesome . I still have my oculus rift cv1 . Might be worth reinstalling to make a comparison to performance in the Index
I get 45fps with the CV1. Enabling ASW also helps.
I can’t get my valve index to be detected! Any suggestions
I’m running a 3080 and on screen run everything on ultra,I can tell you I much prefer the vr to screen basically unplayable without vr for me now and I was in the beta.
hi, Are you saying you’re getting good fps in VR with everything on Ultra in VR? what HMD?
That’s amazing. For me it is such a paradox. the immersion experience is infinitely better in VR, but I miss the crisp beautiful visuals and smooth as silk frame rate on the screen. Hopefully one day, maybe when there is an RTX 6080 and a i15 30850 k overclocked we will get everything we want in VR.
Hi, it took me a while to get it to work. One thing that helped was to not start Steam VR before starting the sim. I started the sim in steam and after picking my flight and aircraft I went into VR mode thru the sim menu. One warning ,for a while all I saw was text in the VR window asking me to press the key to set the pilot POV and nothing on the keyboard would move me off that screen…I had to keep force quitting the sim. Then I saw that you can go into “General Settings” when not in VR, set the binding to a keyboard short cut (I set for space bar). Then I would go into VR mode and once in VR pressed the space bar and then I was in VR. Don’t know if that helps or if that was the problem you had. I do know there was an update to the Steam Client. Make sure you have updated Steam.
I flew over the Italian Alps early today and the graphics where outstanding and buttery smooth with my Rift S and 3080 for about 1 hour. I was very surprised at the crispness and detail.
Then tonight I had stuttering and glitchy visuals.
I think its the Msfs server.
