[Walkthrough] Avoiding CTD´s - Community Troubleshooting Guide

@Sonosusto
I did 2 Touch & Go’s at PDX without any stuttering or crashes. I used current weather and time (although I adjusted the time so that it was morning).

Details:

  • Nothing in Community
  • Graphics in MSFS: High End (GTX 1080)
The reason I use High End instead of Ultra is I don’t notice much a difference between the 2 and High End gives me higher frames, no stutter, smooth flights.
  • Some slider adjustments for Traffic (see photo)

CTD!! the sim is not starting anymore.

Take a look at the faulting module path. Something in your computer is not agreeing with the sim.

I didn’t change anything in my FS20 installation, yesterday it was working perfectly, non ctd’s

Then something else is causing it.

Thanks for taking a look. Mine is still crashing. No mods installed currently. Anyway to see this in event viewer?

See if you have any Application Crash Dumps in this folder (flightsimulator.exe.XXXXX.dmp):
C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\CrashDumps

Or this folder will contain Mini Dumps (MMDDYY-XXXX-XX.dmp):
C:\Windows\minidump

And this folder will contain Memory Dumps (memory.dmp) - these are generally BSOD:
C:\Windows\

To read memory dumps, download from the MS Store the Microsoft Windows Debugger: windbg

More Info in this post:

I’ve got an MSI Ventus 3X RTX 3080, 10700K, 32GB Corsair DDR4, MSI MPG Z490, Samsung 1TB NVME, CoolerMaster 360ML liquid cooler and four additional ARGB fans. Just purchased an EVGA 1000W Gold power supply. Should get here tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.

I had same, CTD before everything

Have removed all community files : CTD
Rebooted: CTD
Started as Admin: CTD

Deleted rollingcache and manualcache file, now it starts

Tried to uninstall and reinstall, but no luck.

It’s always worth running

sfc /scannow … ( as administrator)

to make sure non of your system files have gotten corrupted

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system

I was getting a lot of CTDs.

Ran sfc /scannow - it found and replaced some damaged files, and since then, I have Never had one CTD, despite some test flights of over 15 hours.

That was after patch #2. Paths 3,4 & 5 went without any issues after that.

The other thing you MUST do, until it is fixed.

TURN OFF “Ai Planes” – both types.
Not just a low slider setting … TURN OFF
With AI Planes enables, sooner or later you will loose FPS, and then you are very prone to a CTD.

I do not understand this “reduce Internet bandwidth” advice.
I am on a 1 GB Internet connection, and no issues.

Maybe its a Wireless connection issue… try an Ethernet cable !!

Yeah, tried all of that. Removed everything from community folder, turned AI and Multiplayer off, put on low settings. Still, CTD with KPDX and a few others.
Maybe the update/hotfix corrupted some files?
The sfc scannow fixed a few corrupted files but didn’t help with MSFS unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that, but having those files fixed is good.

What is BAD, is that they got corrupted in the 1st place.
That could be so many things … bad PSU, failing HD, bad memory , bad HD controller , bad fans - getting too hot — PC power off when OS was running etc etc etc.

1st thing I would do is run memtest86 (or similar) for 24 hours, and see if it detects any ram issues…
ie One that boots off USB or CD, and does not involve windows or your hard drive(s)

Deleted both cache files (rollingcache and manualcache) manually ?
I dont think that uninstall will remove these.

It was windows defender, deactivating it unblocked the sim.

MS just pushed out Windows Defender Definition updates. You can manually check by going to Windows Updates.

MS really pis…d me off loosing my precious time with these problems. We have a good flight simulator, but we have to manage with Microsoft on the other hand, I had to wait 8 hours to completely reinstall a copy of a perfectly working FS20, risking to reinstall Windows 10 also.

You can play with windows defender and real-time protection - on.

Try my solution

In windows seacrh bar type
powershell

I am waiting for your report, it looks like I will take the same step to update the system. I’m already tired of CTD.
