Want to upgrade processor. Suggestions?

Hi all. Currently I am running pretty much bare minimum on the motherboard and processor with an I5-6500. My graphics card is decent - a Radeon RX580. Can play RDR2 on high graphics so it’s no slouch. Upgraded to 32GB Ram and moved OS to an SSD and partitioned another drive on it to hold game and sim data. My power supply is oversized and I have a great well ventilated case.

I’ve been watching the deals on Newegg and Amazon for processors and mother boards and have a budget from 400 - 500 dollars I’d like to spend. What’s my best bang for the buck? Saw a combo on Newegg for an I9 series 10 CPU and board for around under 500 and was going to order it and they ran out. Without a deal it looks like I7 series 9 is probably the ballpark. I know nothing of the AMD chips as far as their equivalent. Open to all suggestions.

I’m no pc guy, and I’m not sure how this will fit into your budget but some of the bits are getting older now… mine works very well at ultra settings and rex weather. (Although I did have to back the settings off a bit yesterday to keep above 30fps over a city, it’s possible other applications were running in the background!)

But I have an i9 9900 overclocked to its edge i get 5.2ghz but it runs hot so it is paired with a Corsair all in one two fan water cooler if I had the choice again I think I would choose a three fan aio and maybe cooler master or one with the best thermal reviews.
The graphics card is a 2080ti waterforce all in one water cool 11g memory
Rog maximus hero xi motherboard (I think)
32gb ram, 2tb chewing gum ssd dedicated for the sim and 500gb chew gum ssd for the operating system.

Definitely go for the new AMD zen 3 architecture, much faster than Intel.
Google “ryzen 5000 series and look for yourself…

Have in mind that you’ll need new RAMs also

Zen 3.

I’d recommend a 5600X

Yep, I agree, the 5600X should be great for what you need.

I just upgraded to a 6 core i5 9600K and I no longer have the stuttering that I previously had with the 4 core i5 7600k. Maybe that helps, maybe it doesn’t

I think a lot of people are missing this bit. :small_airplane: :smiley_cat:

Some people buy a 1500 dollar RTX 3090 and hope for the best ( 15-25 FPS gain or more than they have now)

Or… just wait for the new 500 dollar Xbox, if you are a novice user, 60fps for sure at 4k

I already have RAM I believe will be compatible with whatever MB I buy. It’s DDR4 3600 - 4 8GB chips.

Smiles. Yeah I could afford more but I also have a life outside my computer. Can’t let it cut too far into my travel budget for when we are able to do that again. While I love flying around in a sim, I far prefer it to actually take me to other parts of the world. I found a combo on Amazon less than $500 for this - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor with Wraith Prism LED Cooler and ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming AMD AM4 (3rd Gen Ryzen ATX Gaming Motherboard. I might just go for this. Only thing holding me back is I’ll have to wait til next week to get it. I’m not good at patience.

That’s too bad, because if you had a bit more patience, the Ryzen 5000 series CPU’s are launching on the 5th of november, and they’re going to be a LOT better for MSFS.
As stated above, the 5600X will blow the 3700X clean out of the water performance wise for MSFS. The 5800X even more, but will likely not fit the budget.

Well it’s probably why the deals are out there for the 3000 series then. My MSFS will improve substantially. With my old board I wasn’t even overclocking and I just have this feeling that the AMD processor is going to get along much better with my AMD graphics card. Found a different motherboard and now it’s coming before 6 tonight. See… no patience.

Enjoy your new system then

Wait for the 5000 series Ryzen procs. (Aka Zen 3.)

Are you pitching in the extra money? I’d gladly wait then. lol The parts are supposed to be here by 6 tonight so I’m looking forward to smooth flights after the rebuild with no waiting required.

Fun! I love building a new system… wish I could do it more often.

There is no proof of this yet so I would make a suggestion on something not out yet. Besides the new 5000chips are expensive
