Both the standard weather and the add-on weather always only refer to a more or less precise weather situation “around the aircraft”. This leads to more or less sudden changes in the weather.
In reality, however, one can see hundreds of miles away with increasing flight altitude and see e.g. distant front systems, thunderstorm zones or even regional weather events. Unfortunately, however, the FS2020 weather always appears to be the same up to a horizon hundreds of miles away - namely the weather near the aircraft. That is unrealistic and affects immersion.

This is how I would describe the METAR injectors like Rex and Unreal. They change the weather “around the aircraft”.
By standard weather do you mean Flight Simulator’s Live Weather? Because this works differently in that the weather is a discrete place in the world that you fly to, rather than an effect around you. I do see upcoming frontal systems and thunderstorms. But I fly down low for the most part, so this “pop-up” effect is probably a lot less noticeable. Is this just a matter of extending the draw distance on the weather?
I use REX and notice the same thing - the weather will be overcast and then when entering the next METAR area the sky will quickly transform to the next weather situation (if different). So once you enter a clear sky situation and you look back, the overcast area is gone for example. If I recall, this wasn’t the case with FSX - you could see a storm approaching or look back and see it behind you for quite some time.
Bit of a surprising observation. One of the main things I had noticed about FS2020 with live weather was it wasn’t like this! You could be flying in quite clear skies and see cloud and rain in the distance and eventually fly through it (if it hadn’t moved or stopped in the meantime). Or even have it move over you while sitting at an airfield.

MSFS default weather builds weather for hundreds of miles. REX doesn’t- they only render METAR reports for the surrounding area AFAIK.
Oh yes, that was the case with FSX big time! I abandoned REX because of that. Active Sky was better but still not perfect.
Haven’t noticed anything like that with live weather in MSFS yet. In fact, it’s pretty much what I wanted for all these years scratching my head over the FSX weather.
Ok, then it was possibly a misobservation by myself as I mostly use rex. Sorry folks!
But: Is Asobo working on some improvements rex is better? The limited visibility due to moisture for example? And what about local accuracy? I often see the whether on my iphone much more accurate for local situations and also for area changes then in MSFS… In rex the accuracy depends on the distance to the next metar - but in general it seems to be much more precise…
