What did I do in MSFS (2024) today?

I went exploring in the Edgly Optica, (MSFS calls it something else, I forget what), and discovered that my flight control settings still had some muck-ups that I needed to tweak - the POV hat-switch was a big one! - it’s kinda’ hard to fly VFR and even think about pattern-flying if you can’t look around.

The Optica is an outstanding aircraft for general low-level snooping as it flies comfortably at less than 100kts and floats down gently at 60kts.  Aside from being torqued worse than the head-bolts of a V8 engine in a '78 Chevy, it’s a dream to fly.  (If I can fly - and land! - the beastie w/o leaving scattered wreckage everywhere, it’s gotta be a sweetheart!)

The only things I had trouble with was the tendency to torque left, (roll) and want to turn to the left, (possibly also because of the tendency to roll left), which required constant correction.  I ended up punting and adding aileron trim to counteract it.

Flying out of UUMO, (Ostyfayavo, my “home” airport), I wanted to see how recent the 2024 scenery is around Moscow Russia, as the 2020 scenery is (ahem!) “rather dated”. <= Masterpiece of understatement!

Unlike 2020 the scenery is (relatively) recent, (within the last few years), and most current road-work has been done - including the roads from Sherbinka to Youzhno Butovo (Южное Бутово) near the Butovo mall and both the buildings and construction for the new development at Youzhno Bitza, (Южная Битца), including the access roads in the correct places.  The new bridges and the new MRD, (Moscow Radial Road) are missing, but that’s OK because they’re only about a year old, and opened for traffic just two weeks ago.

Here’s the view of the Butovo Mall from the Optica:

Note that in 2020 this is either a big factory or a bunch of commercial greenhouses that haven’t been there since The Fall Of Rome.

I really love the small “helicopter” instrument panel - there’s more visibility than an oceanarium!  (And I don’t have to adjust the seat height to its “second-floor” setting to see over the instruments!)  It’s like flying a helicopter without having to go to the trouble of learning to fly a helicopter.

Picky gripe:
The ground texture and view seems to be dependent on the month instead of the outside temperature.  As a part of my “Fantasy Weather” settings, the outside temperature is set to 21°C - yet there’s enough snow on the ground to cover things rather deeply because the “month” is set to “January”.  To be honest, fairly deep snow is not unusual in Moscow during the month of January.

Also, I’m really going to have to have a talk with the folks at the РЖД, (Russian National Railways), as they don’t seem to have plowed the tracks in weeks!

Check out the Moon setting this early morning if you get a chance. Doesn’t screenshot well.

I got my CPL in Career mode today (nobb btw)

Gave up on this increasingly dead-end entertainment experience when it failed to load (again) because of “server issues.” (I’m a non-frequnet flyer, so in three attempts to play MSFS2020 in the past three weeks, two were fails because of this issue.)

I decided to fly from Gorge River (NZQE) to Quintin Lodge (T004) with stops at Martins Bay (NZMJ) and Milford Sound (NZMF) using the BlackBox BN-2 Islander. Here is the start with the temp. at a balmy 20 Celsius/ 70 Fahrenheit.

So I get to Milford Sound and then the Lodge and this is what I get (still the same temperature):

I am not sure where the snow came from or why it would be there in the summer. Fun trip anyway.

So yesterday evening after my physics-defying landing in FS2024 (see above a few posts, lol), I loaded into FS2020 and reversed the route in the PMDG 777-300ER. With 4X time acceleration in cruise, I was able to do the complete flight in well under 2 hours. I had a really nice late afternoon departure from SFO and early cruise, and a quite pretty night approach and landing into ORD.
