Depending on the plane, I’ve more or less decided on letting my altitude on the downwind leg determine my distance from the runway. As soon as I reach 1,000 ft AGL at the crosswind leg, assuming I didn’t go too fast on the leg, I make a turn to downwind . I estimate that at about 1000 ft my distance from the runway is ‘good enough’.
