I’m ready for a next challenge. After learning to fly the Comanche, a few airliners and the Spitfire I am looking for something completely new. I think helicopters are a great next step. I do have rudder pedals but not the best (second hand CH pedals). I play 2020.
I am looking for:
not too difficult but also definitely not the easiest or most automated one.
I started flying helicopters quite recently also. And after training for a while on the Bell 407 I switched to Taogs Bell UH-1H (also civil 205). I think it is a little easier to fly then the Bell 407 (and I think I also read in the thread from others, that it´s more on the easier side).
It has a great sound, some design options, optional military personel (at least for the UH-1H) and has a cruise speed of 115 knots.
I´m not sure what you mean by “great views”. The view from the cockpit is Ok, I would say. I almost don´t use the fixed external cameras, but there are a few.
Here are a few teaser screenshots from todays flight:
The Cowansim R66 would be a good option. It is relatively easy too fly and has great visibility. Might be a better option for sightseeing than the Huey, although I love that one as well.
For a MSFS2020 default helicopter, you can never go wrong with the Cabri G2, it’s just a little on the slow side but handles nicely and has great visibility as well.
Sightseeing (while flying) is what you do after you finish learning to hover-taxi, take off, cruise, hover around a spot (avoiding vortex ring state), descend, land on a runway or taxi-way, (and eventually land to helipads).
When I was looking to learn to fly rotorcraft, I chose the Cabri G2 to learn with. For sight-seeing while learning, I mapped active pause and toggle external view to buttons on my joystick.
The Cabri G2 does not have great visibility, but it has quite good visibility, with minimal panel to obstruct the pilot’s view. The Robinson 22 is the more popular trainer in the US, with similar good visibility but was not standard with my chosen sim level. (Additionally, I learned using X-Plane11 and wanted a bird from vSkyLabs so the G2 was the best trainer.)
Cruising at speed in a heli is not that difficult to master, but sightseeing wants slower flight which takes more experience. There is a reason the Cabri G2 and Robinson R22 are the most popular training rotorcraft.
Before you buy anything, you should start with the freeware H-135.
Visibility is maybe not the best but good for looking around. There are several “modes” for the flight model, from “arcade” to “realistic”, that you can select from a tablet in the cockpit. It’s agile and fast, and it’s easy enough to control under 40 knots (then very easy above 40 knots).
I highly recommend it.
On the contrary, I wouldn’t really recommend the default copters, which are quite twitchy, hence difficult to control at low speeds. There are some mods (for example for the 407) which make things a bit better though.
On the payware side, I don’t have much payware copters but I think the Huey is a good recommendation: it might not have the best view from the cockpit, but the overall realism, sound and atmosphere in the cockpit are really a blast. It’s not slow, but it’s a bit heavy and easier to control that lighter helicopters.
I also have the Bell 222 and it’s magnificient, but the view from the cockpit is quite restricted (big panel), so it’s not really what you’re looking for (for now ). I also have the Mi-17, which I love, but it’s very difficult to control, and the view from the cockpit is also a bit restricted (big panel)
One of the most stable helicopters i find is the Chinook.
I have the Miltech version (in both 2020 & 2024) …and its wonderful.
Visibility from the cockpit is not maybe so good …but for controlability is wonderful!
Another sightseeing option is something like the Optica or a microlight …love flying both those in the sim to!
Just noticed that 5 of the best choppers in the game, and they are all great for sightseeing, just got playable on marketplace!
Cowan 206, EC130, R66 and H125 ( best chopper in the game no contest!)
And Taogs Alouette!
