thanks for the advice, i might give it a try one time. Including the mods.
So far my frequent flying birds are:
PMDG 737-7/800, Gotfriends discus 2C, HPG H145 (including action pack), PMDG DC6, HPG Hot air balloon, Fenix A320, FI Spittfire, Simworks Studio Kodiak 100 and the IFT MB339
Its quite a variety of planes/aircraft. One for every occasion.
I like variety. And some of those default planes are quite good now, particularly after the AAU I improvements (TBM, CJ4 and Longitude particularly).
And yes, the Kodiak is one of my favourites as well. Haven’t flown it in a while now, but I do quite enjoy it.
Arrow up key on your KB helps a lot.
Leaning outside too.
I can understand your point but taxiing, starts and landings are in fact only short moments during the entire flight.
Wonderful story that I followed on FSE as well. Never heard of this story until then. Thanks for writing it down here as well!
But they are the most critical phases…
The 787-10 is my dust collector at the moment, it was the only reason why I purchased the deluxe version of MSFS.
However , I’m hoping the WT rework of the 787 can wipe the dust off.
So far people seem to be enjoying the new 787. I don’t fly it myself so don’t have any personal opinion. But it seems to be very well received so far.
Oh, the Spitfire was such a pleasant surprise… I’ve avoided warbirds in FS since… forever
but caved with the ini P-40 on sale… then decided to pick up the Spitfire after much agonizing, since I just relocated to a place with a unique history with the plane. It’s so good… and such a blast in VR. I don’t mind going deaf leaving the volume up on it
for shelved aircraft…
Halo Pelican - we already have slew mode… it’s not a flight model.
Do J - I’ll revisit it when the water physics have improved and there’s a lot more seaplane bases included
( and every other flying boat, unfortunately )
Twotter is shelved - it’s just a freakshow at 80 kts or less and non-stop bugs with right clicking to freelook shutting off all electrical systems every other time I try to use the plane.
I still fly the Ju-52 and DC-3 but feel like the FM is way off… they both leap off the ground in literally 3-5 seconds… any 1930s transport plane is going to take at least a week to get off the ground… there’s just no way the FM is correct…
There’s one GA plane that I love IRL and was an early 3rd party release… and I just feel like the developer was in way over his head, ported an FSX model …and he seemed to really try and miss the boat - so I don’t want to name and shame… but really hope someone else remakes the plane.
Pretty much all of the Jets fall into the category of flown it once or twice and then put them out to pasture. That is not necessarily a reflection on these aircraft but rather more on my personal preference to airplanes with props on them.
Preferably such where the propeller is driven by radial engine.
Aside from that were only a few airplanes I downloaded to test and found lacking in one way or another and they were then deleted until a new release promised to improve them.
The JU-52/3 at medium to light weights is off the ground in extremely short distance. I had the pleasure to fly with D-AQUI when she was still being operated by LH crews on scenic flights.
All seats were filled and she was fueled for three or four flights of approximately 30 minutes, so she was not light. Since I knew the captain quite well I was allowed to take the right seat for a bit and hold her on course for a few minutes.
But I am by no means rated on the type or can testify that the FM is 100% accurate.
I have never flown the Deluxe 787, ever.
Aircraft I do fly from Premium/Deluxe are - Steam c172 (with mod and sound pack), the amazing and under-rated Pipistrel Virus, The Beech Baron with the Black Square Steam mod, and occasionally, the Longitude.
Planes I no longer fly are generally because something came out I liked better. The Stearman for example is a great addon but now that I have the Tiger Moth, the Tiger Moth has become my go-to open cockpit biplane.
OR in some cases, there are aircraft I knew I would rarely or never fly but bought it anyway. The Bleriot, some of the weird golden age or earlier seaplanes and the AN225 are all in that category. I purchased them knowing full well beforehand I would rarely or never fly them but wanted them anyway.
I think that’s the case for most of the default planes for me. I’ve flown them all at least once. Found that most weren’t my bag, and stuck with what I liked. Like you said, it’s a matter of personal preference, not because the planes were problematic per se.
I love the Widgeon regardless of its warts.
I am going to beg FlySimware to, at least, fix the Garmin products’ bezels.
I was just flying it off the coast of CA and landed in Morro Bay and found the experience delightful.
It looks really nice clad in a @pby5a repaint!
Just to update, the Widgeon just got sold in FSE! Thanks to whoever bought it, hope they liked it a lot better than I did lol!
Same goes with the An 225 for me.
Regarding other payware, I usually go with planes that I have a personal connection with (I spent lots of my childhood on an airfield since my father used to go parachuting) - C172 (JustFlight), C208B (Blacksquare), An 2 (Ini), the C182RG announced by Carenado will be the next addition. I’m waiting for the DA42 to be added to the hangar soon and still hope for a Skyvan, C180/185, Let 410 or a Do 27. Also, with the proximity to Neuburg/Donau where the German 74th Fighter Wing is located, I also enjoy the Eurofighter.
All of the mentioned are flown on occasion and depending on my mood, while the Twin Otter more or less is a dust collector bought due to nostalgia for the older in-sim DHC-6 days. Also the Reno planes don’t really get my attention any more…
LOL, I’d forgotten that thing. It’s the size of an office building but only carries like 8 pax and a jeep, and didn’t come with the jeep. And it cannot taxi whatsoever. And although the panel is glass, it has the functionality of a 1950s VFR panel. Seems like the future is a bit retro But it was free so hey, why not? And it’s good for some drunken MP shenanigans once a year or so
Thank you very much!
Back when MSFS first came out, my and my MP coconspirator @CuzDawg3 flew a number of stock planes on a fairly regular basis because there weren’t many 3rd party planes yet. One of our favorites was the JMB VL-3 because it was relatively fast and notably dangerous IRL, plus looks cool. This was our “fighter” of choice to go harass serious folks flying tubeliners at busy airports. But somewhere along the way, a patch totally nerfed this plane so it has trouble making 100ikn now, and the ASI bands have been moved to reflect this. But nobody much flies the thing anyway so I guess nobody but me seems to have noticed. Besides, we now have all the Reno P51s for the role this plane use to fulfill.
Another stock plane we used to fly a lot was the Flight Design “CTLS” which was really (and now officially is) the CTSL instead. The attraction of this plane was that it had (and still has) some fun performance, like being able to do a Cuban 8 right off the runway. But mostly it was originally, the plane lacked an attitude indicator, so naturally we used to fly it into hurricanes and other low-viz situations. But after AAU 1, the Aera gizmo got a attitude indicator and an HSI, so this is no longer as much fun.
In FSE, I also used to fly the C208 “Grindavan” a LOT. That’s how I got the money to buy a TBM. And we also used to do a lot of MP with it because it’s fun to fly into insanely short fields when at max weight. But I haven’t touched it in FSE since I got my TBM and in MP, there are now 3rd party and Asobo planes that are more fun for such missions. The “Reindeer”, the An-2, etc. I still have a soft spot for the “Grindavan”, however, so sometimes regret not flying it.
Otherwise, the only stock planes I fly regularly are the TBM, Baron, and X-Cub. But I never really flew any of the others enough to qualify for inclusion in this thread.
Funny thing, but I enjoy the Widgeon and am surprised that so many folks don’t like it. I think it’s a better product than EITHER Goose. It’s just that MSFS has too many flying boats and seaplanes (and is about to add another) without proper infrastructure to use them as they should be used.
Wow! You said what I was afraid to say out loud!
Halo pelican
Wright flyer
Spirit of st louis
Velocopter
The gliders
Curtis jenny
Extra 300
The pitts biplanes
Not flown nor will ever fly them, wish they could be deleted fully but it’s not an opton xbox
Well, I’m with you on the Wright, SoStL, and Volocity. But you really should give the others a try. The Pittses and Extra have way too much power for their own good so you can do all kinds of silly things with them.
The Jenny is delightfully and realistically awful if you’re into vintage stuff. Besides, starting cold-and-dark means hand-propping, which is always a plus in my book. Unfortunately, it’s not as much fun now as it was when released. Originally, it had a bug where its engine sound was heard at max volume by all players within like a 20-mile radius, making radios difficult to hear. Thus, it was a schadenfreude thing to start one at a busy VATSIM airport and leave it running there all day with infinite fuel set while you went to work, went to bed, etc. Sadly, this got fixed after a week or 2.
And really, you ain’t flown until you’ve flown gliders. They are SUCH a different experience from powered flight. Every takeoff is either in formation or a launch from a catapult. If using a tow plane, careful formation must be maintained for quite a while after takeoff. Then you can, with help from the Wind Gods, gain further altitude all day without ever having an engine. The things have to be forced to quit flying, and every landing is bellying in with a deliberate nose strike for braking, and then always ends with a wing strike and partial ground loop. And you can enjoy all this using your inside voice because you’re not having to talk over engine noise.
The Jenny is a gorgeous model, with an animated engine. It flies quite well too. Taxiing with no brakes adds to the thrill. I’d not even looked at it until my son suggested it, and while it’s rare that I fly the Jenny, when I’m in the mood for something classic it is fun.
