What will be the next best realistic flight sim be?

I can only imagine MSFS2020 right now but idk if someone or Microsoft will make another realastic flight simulator which is more realistic then MSFS2020. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comment.

Hi,
Just a heads up that conversations in these forums can only really be about Microsoft Flight Simulator. It’s okay to compare it to other flight sims, but the conversation has to always tie into MSFS. If it deviates too far, we may have to close the topic.

About Microsoft Flight Simulator:
MSFS is a platform, and will continue to evolve. I know that people have said that development will be limited to ten years, but that has been addressed here (21:57). I don’t think it’s any coincidence that “2020” has been dropped from the name, as the goal is to make this relevant in 2030 and beyond. It would have to be a completely radical new architecture for them to leave this and go to a new platform. I don’t see that any time soon.

the sim is two years through a ten year programme
their aim is already to make it as realistic as possible given todays technology which is already pretty impressive considering we have the entire virtual world at our disposal
 what else do you want?

Ok sorry about that

No problem! We’ll keep it open for now, but unfortunately, the discussion may have to be restricted a little more than you probably initially wanted.

There are very few people in this business of flight sims that have the money or the resources to build a better sim at the moment. But who knowns down the track.

I guess my question is what won’t MSFS be able to do without a major rewrite? The modules can all be updated over time. The data from servers can be updated whenever they want. New Bing maps will make their way in over time. New features and capabilities are added regularly.

They could perpetually update it, yes? If they eventually update every file, will is still be the MSFS we know today?

Really good VR.

All I can say is that, I am completely enjoying MSFS the way it is now. Just look at the major DLSS update! This sim can easily still be relevant 10 years from now. Just look at other games. For example: Elder Scrolls Online is still going strong 8 years later, and is constantly updated, and pretty to look at! Thank you Asobo for this wonderful simulator!

MSFS can improve physics, include bird aereas based on real world data, make the aircraft take longer to stop when the runway is wet, improve even more the graphics with better night lights and atmosphere etc. Just examples

I believe MSFS is well on it’s way to being the most realistic flight sim on the market.

Here a few random thoughts on where I think further development could lead to interesting results:

  • ATC based on artificial intelligence (AI), being aware not only of the user airplane and general wind directions, but really being aware „of the living (simulated) world“ (specifically other user aircraft, too)
  • Perhaps even learning „on the job“ (or should we rather say: „on the fly“, ha ha), taking „traffic jams“ on runways into account (and learning to detect „rogue players“ that won‘t follow ATC instructions, perhabs even warning other aircraft in the vicinity
  • Spinning this further, perhaps even a „global“, networked ATC that would get its „global instructions“ (basic flying routes, acting on „global events“) from the cloud (Azure), while perhaps still also acting „locally“, that is making (some) decisions client-based
  • And perhaps even an AI ATC that could interact not only with pilots („Pan! Pan! Pan! I need an emergency landing!“), but with other human ATC

Graphics / world

  • I am really eager to see what „AI generated buildings/structures“ could improve upon!
  • Photogrammetry is all nice, and hand-modelled POIs, too - but we will never see any significant coverage of the entire world with those techniques (my prediction ;))
  • (Why? Financial interests - most towns/cities are simply „not interesting enough“ for expensive aerial photography - but as drones become more „intelligent“ and precise, who knows
)

see the post above your post
it’s not a “10 year programme”

MS has just scratched the surface of realism. See Ultra realistic graphics that will MELT the RTX 4090 - YouTube where realism is headed. I have no doubt that MS will be this good in a few years
it is already quite amazing. FWIW

I think with latest news P3D will also evolve and become a better flightsim than it used to be, they were simply totally overrun by Microsoft. Nobody expected MS to revive the Flightsim genre and with such an incredibly huge and mature project. MSFS itself is far from mature, frankly, but the idea to rebuild a top modern flightsim is impressive and for now it has worked out amazingly. XPlane has always been good but I assume it always lacked a high financial background. When a huge entertainment like MS pays the bills however you can do just anyting. MSFS has to open up, at least for PC. Once that has been done “the sky is the limit”.

While 40 years of enhancements has made MSFS a fantastic product at an affordable price point, I think this is just the beginning. People worldwide have always loved the adventure of flight and MS is using its many technologies to enhance and enrich this adventure.

well, you can create wish-topics for all the realism , or other points, you miss in the current version of MSFS2020. Then we also know what you exactly means with “more realistic” and can discuss :slightly_smiling_face:

Love the sim, but I think the “next best” would be a MSFS that has somehow worked out how to give users ULTRA setting, stutter-free, perfect performance
 wait for it
WITHOUT REQUIRING THE LATEST, GREATEST COMPUTER EQUIPMENT!! (in VR too, of course )

How about if in ten years from now people who still used those “old 4000 series” nvidia cards would not be able to tell the sim from real-life :joy:

When it comes to graphics, P3D is already 10 years out of date. It may still be the leading sim in a few regards but MSFS started from scratch in many areas and with over 30 years experience in flight sims and probably the largest resources in the software business as well as access to worldwide satellite data MS has quite a lead now. We can already see that XPlane 12 still falls short of MSFS visually despite being brand new.

All in all I don’t think that there will be a fourth contender in this business for a while.

Yet competition could arise from Epic Games in the years to come:

My great thanks to Jörg/Seb/Martial.
The right people at the right place, the “right stuff”.
They took a tremendous risk and made possible , only a few guys thought it would be possible then !!
