What's the deal with the wind?

I feel like lately I just can’t seem to take off or land without having to fight the wind like crazy. It seems like wherever I fly there’s a half storm and if I’m lucky I can take off or land towards the wind but that’s very rare. Has the wind system been broken in an update or am I just going crazy?

Hey there, @UDDEVALLAPPL. I moved your post to the “Community Help Center/Weather” category where there is a better chance it will be noticed and discussed with folks having the same issue. I also added the “wind” tag to help with search discovery.

Several thoughts… if you are using “Live Weather” and loading a flight where storms are nearby and/or wind speeds are high, this is to be expected. I know there is still work to be done to further refine Live Weather, but this is still working fairly well, IMHO.

If winds are an issue, you can always start your flights using Weather Presets or even design your own weather scenario with a Custom weather profile.

People on here complained about the wind turbulence not being right, or some rubbish. People with no real life flying experience, may I add - like in the vast majority of cases.

They added back the broken wind system and now all aircraft are back to being tossed around the skies like a tin can.

Much like real life, if the weather is too bad to fly, you gotta wait. Except here in the sim, you have the omniscient power to change it using presets. Set something less energetic and get flying.

I stopped reading there  JK

I think you mean the discussion about wind gusts not being simulated in live weather?
Because that is a big issue.

Even the manual presets wind gusts seems broken to me.

I think I do get some gusts in live weather, but it might be due to abrupt weather transitions, not sure.

Check the wind against windy.com if you think the sim is in error. I’ve used it for over a year now across dozens of flights around the world and I do not recall a landing or takeoff in which the surface wind was not within 2-3kts of what was reported on the site, as well as within a few degrees of the proper heading (as reported by this landing analysis tool). I can use windy.com reliably to know in advance which runway ATC will assign me for arrival, or which runway I should plan to arrive at for a non-towered field, same for takeoff.

Just want to show how the difference in realism with gusts. There is no gusts in live weather right now.

Live-weather wind

Custom-weather wind with gusts. Not the best at landing but it’s much more challenging and feels rewarding in gusty winds when i nail them. Every landing is different with gusts as it is IRL too.

Real life footage of crosswind gusty landings.

Yeah it has much issues. I just have the gusts per minute at standard 35 per minute. If i change that to less i can’t get it back to 35 again. And if i set it to less it seems like they increase in gusts per minute instead. 35 gusts per minute is much too frequent. Maybe 1-5 gusts per minute is enought. If i decide to close weather settings menu the gust value i set resets to 0. I need to have it open when i’m using gusts. But it’s not working as it should. I would like gust in live-weather too. Would make live-weather feel realistic. Now it’s an easy mode we can’t make more realistic than Asobo decide it to be for every user. We only have on/off switch for that. No other options.

There are no gusts in live weather, and it is ludicrously easy to land even in strong crosswinds that would normally result in a high chance of go-arounds and most likely diversions. Yesterday I tried landings at several location with the highest reported winds and gusts from badbadweather.com :: High gusts while the correct constant wind was shown on the display, in 40+ knot crosswinds with supposed gusts, there were no gusts, no turbulence and I could make the landings simply by setting a crab and then not having to touch the controls. It’s nonsense.

I think a lot of people don’t realise just how hard landing even in a moderate cross wind is. There seems to be a strange perception that if you can’t make a landing because of the turbulence, somehow turbulence is modelled incorrectly. This is what happens in REAL LIFE, once winds are getting beyond 20 knots crosswind it is challenging for real pilots in big jets, and yes they do get tossed around. And people here are upset that they can’t make a nice landing in their Cessna? It’s absurd. Go to youtube and look at videos of landings in stormy conditions, of Funchal just about any day of the year (flights regularly divert back to Portugal from Funchal and won’t go until the next day).

I can’t for the life of me understand why people want a flight simulator in which the planes fly around on rails even in storms? I flew back from Mexico to Madrid in real life the other day and yes in clear skies we were getting bumped around a lot, jet stream related I presume. In this sim I can fly into a monster cumulonimbus without a bump, it is such a fundamental flaw and it seems the developers don’t care, and a lot of people using the sim want it to stay that way judging by the complaints as soon as their flight gets the slightest bump.
