As per the title; what’s the most popular VR at the moment. Any feedback on pros and cons would be welcome.
Popular or best?
Most popular: Probably the Quest 3
Best Quality while hurting your wallet: Pimax Crystal/Crystal Light
Best Quality and the screaming from your wallet doesn’t matter: Somnium VR1 or the Varjo XR4.
give both answers
Also, I can only speak to the qualities of the Quest 3, since that is what I’m using right now.
Pros
- the cost
- Pancake lenses rather than Fresnels
- The FOV seems ok, but I can only compare that to the PSVR2. Both sets seem fine to me, but I won’t claim to be an expert.
- The image quality for the price paid is good.
Cons
- The battery life is kind of short. I find you get about two hours of steady use before getting low batt warnings.
- The headstrap. I’m still using it but its probably the first thing to replace. I’m looking at straps with an extended battery like the ones made by Kiwi.
- The passthrough is serviceable but not great. Better than the PSVR2’s by far though.
- No DP connection. I wish it had this so I could tether rather than use virtual desktop. VD works okay, but it is a pain to deal with and I’m not all that happy with the wireless connection performance.
- Tethering is through a USB 3.2 link cable which doesn’t seem all that much better than using virtual desktop. Anyway, META is out of their mind with the price they want for a cable.
I’d like to try my PSVR2 headset out on the PC, but the link box was sold out last time I looked. Par for the course with anything that SONY launches.
I finally replaced my trusted servant, the Rift CV1, a few months ago, with a Quest 3 and have loved using it.
However, as far as cost goes, by the time I had also invested in a battery head-strap, facial interface and charging station, the total amount wouldn’t have been too far from the cost of the Pimax Crystal Light.
No worries, though, it really is an excellent piece of kit and any early “wrinkles” appear to be getting ironed out, with every new version of the firmware.
I use it via Virtual Desktop, by the way.
Quest 3 with battery head-strap, using Virtual Desktop !
I have the crystal light. Before I had Reverb G2 and before that Quest 2. The PCL has way better image quality than either (just don’t forget to remove the lens covers inside, like I did LOL.
It also give better fps than G2 or Q2.
The bright sharp image is hard to describe. I think its as good as my 1440p 2D monitor in clarity and lack of artifacts.
But they say Q3 has wider limits on IPD (distance between pupils on different size faces, a big library of other games, no wires.
And much better pass through. (Yes PCL has pass through but it’s black and white and very low res. I can see the swtiches on my Warthog throttle, but on my Stream Deck I can’t read what’s on the screen of the 32 buttons, I can only see the buttons). I’m sure the Q3 pass through is much much better and in color.
My PCL has no issues, perfect lenses. Others report something wrong with the lenses.
