What's up with the aircraft labels?

I have been noticing that the aircraft around me in the sky have intriguing labels. Some are obviously live aircraft (UAL311, for example). But the labels on fellow players’ aircraft seem to be of two kinds:
Some labels show what I assume to be the player’s username. Other aircraft seem to have randomly-generated labels with nonsense words like “ObligationSquirrel1045,” or “GummyCourt28.”

My guess is that the difference is between those players who are flying with the Live option turned on and those who are not. Can someone verify this?

Just curious (but it’s driving me crazy.)

They’re just people’s usernames, lots of people put silly stuff…

the people don’t choose the gamertags, it’s generated by Xbox/Microsoft.

So a person can choose to use their own user name for their gamertag or have one automatically generated for them?

From the Xbox website:

“You can easily change your Xbox gamertag. If you want to change the gamertag that we created for you when you first signed up for Xbox (meaning you didn’t choose it yourself), you can change it one time for free. After that, all Xbox gamertag changes cost extra.”

Obviously, you cannot have the same name as someone else.
