When 10 miles visibility is not

Don’t know if you guys are all experience the smoke, haze from the Canada fires. Last night looked nice , all stations reporting 10 miles visibility. I take off, reach 2000 feet, I estimate if I am lucky visibility is about 4 miles with the smoke. I couldn’t see anything. Ended up cutting my flight short and just going back in and landing. My GPS was reading 3.7 miles to the airport, I could not see it. I always thought it was funny when VFR flight is legal at 3 miles, that is just crazy when you actually see what that means lol.
