I suppose if they really nailed the Bing maps/Photogrammetry then they could sell such an online upgrade as a subscription.
But it would have to be properly working and a serious upgrade.
Think of 2 tiers.
At tier 1 you get what you already have. Maps data and photogrammetry that often looks a bit like fingerpaint on wet cardboard.
At tier 2 you get next gen “God mode” photorealism
Imagine for a moment a competitor like Google deciding to showcase their maps data and flex some new AI photogrammetry partnership…now imagine a third party developer managing to tweak the games code which allows this service to take the place of the existing streamed maps and photogrammetry.
If this scenario were possible and the result was better by a significant margin but required a monthly subscription to this online service I am fairly sure that people would pay.
Therefore, if it is possible to have a “premium experience” people will subscribe and I see this type of upgrade subscription service as a possible revenue source going forward.
