Awesome looking machine

was an airshow favourite

Overhead my school every day when I was a kid, we were under a refuelling track. It’s a bit of a wild looking thing…

Waiting for a Kodiak mod to refine the ailing landing dynamics of the present SWS version. Maybe Robert Young ?

You guys need to bone up on your ‘V Bombers’ Vickers Valiant, Avro Vulcan, Handley Page Victor. Check out the Blue Steel stand off missile too.

The Valiant was a bit of a disaster really, 1940’s tech with jet engines. Back in the day I worked on both Vulcan and Victor and I can tell you which was the better designed and built - and the easier to maintain. Oddly, it was the agricultural nature of the Vulcan that saw it survive longer as a bomber. All designed to fly above the range of Soviet era ground to air missiles, they were quickly changed to low level after the USSR proved that they could reach those 60,000ft + altitudes. Can you imagine flying a 120ft span aircraft at 200ft with an early TFR?

The earlier Victor B1 aircraft had been converted to tankers and the B2 followed them in that role as they were not structurally suited to those low level environments. The Vulcan with its massively thick wing (and main spar) and lower wing loading could cope in the more dense low altitude air.

If you have not heard of the Black Buck raid of the Falkland Island campaign, check it out. One Vulcan from Ascension Island to the Falklands and back (8000mls) and 13 Victors for the refuelling op.

I watched a YT video on this a while back.

Interesting info, thanks for that. The Vulcan flew low over Barton airport (tiny airport near where I live) for a few years in air displays. Out of all the aircraft that flew over the airport, the Vulcan was almost frightening, the noise, I swear you could feel the vibration from the aircraft, I’ll never forget that plane. I can’t imagine how scary it must have been on the Falklands if the Vulcan flew over in the pitch dark.
Just watched its last flight over Barton on YouTube, it was good, but it doesn’t do justice to the noise it makes when you are there. Probably late 70’s early 80’s when I saw it, there was little else comparable……at least that flew over Barton.

I hadn’t seen that vid before so thanks for that. There is an excellent book, ‘Vulcan 607’ by Rowland White which explains the Black Buck sorty in great detail and is a really good read. It explains more precisely the risks and gambles that were taken to ensure that 607 managed to recover to Ascension.

My time on the V Force was the late 60’s. In '82 I was investigating whether the ‘new’ Tornado GR1 would be capable of taking part.

After a mere 8 weeks from buying the sim, I have a lot of planes. I thought I’d better start flying more and decided to start from the beginning with the Wright Flyer and work my way forward - I’m finding the history of each plane far more interesting than I thought. Currently preparing to fly across the Alps as did the fatal flight of Jorge Chavez.

Here are 10 which I feel are missing and I personally would like to see, each being famous in its own right (in my opinion).

1920’s

Fokker dr-1 (Tri Wing; flown by Von richtofen aka red baron)

Sopwith Camel

1930’s overlapping with 1940’s

Gypsy Moth - Amy Johnson; first woman England to Australia

Lancaster

Mosquito

Stuka

Flying Fortress

Mitsubishi Zero

Me 109 and the Focke Wulf (already in production I believe)

DR-1 and Mitsubishi Zero are available as freeware on PC. I thought (even though your username and profile says otherwise) that you are on PC? (or I’m mixing you up with someone else from my T10 thread)

Aero Commander 500 (study level)

Thanks for that, I’m on both, started on Xbox, then went to pc as well when the Xbox had its problem with impromptu shutdowns.

Can’t really complain if freeware, but do you know if the DR-1 and Zero are good quality?
The Sopwith Camel on WW1 warplanes on the Quest is good fun.

Just started watching it, his opening comments ring true with what I posted earlier. 40 years later and it has still made a lasting impression on me. For me personally, words can’t describe that plane.

The DR-1 is by MyKrode (from Got Friends fame lol), so yeah it’s good. It’s an older effort by him, but it’s fun and unique! Great reviews here:

The Zero is by Fsadni, also a VERY experienced and respected aircraft creator. Also great reviews here but I have not flown this one much:

Why not try them? - I mean, it won’t cost you anything to make up your own mind

Thanks a lot for that, will do. The DR-1 looks great and fits in with my timeline for flying my way through aviation history……across the Alps in the Bleriot today, recreating Chavez’s fatal trip.

I would be very happy with a good A350 and A220 in the marketplace for Xbox :+1:

not sure if it was already mentioned here (I did a forum search but nothing came up).
I would love to see 2 helicopters created for MSFS:

  1. RAH-66 Comanche
  2. Airwolf

There was a Comanche for FS2004/FSX done by Area51Sim and it was a pretty nice model. I still have the installation files in my FS Archives. But I don’t recommend going to the dev’s website as it has been taken over by some sh*t. Apparently the dev is not operating any longer. The model can still be bought here though - Microsoft Flight Simulator X Add Ons
The “real” RAH-66 Comanche itself was being developed as a next gen scout light attack heli, but in the end got nixed due to rising costs and changing priorities, which is a real shame because it is such a beautiful and sleek piece of machinery.
As for Airwolf, for me this is the most amazing (fictional) heli of all times. It was the main star of a tv show titled Airwolf made in the '80s. It has beautiful curves and a menacing look (especially with the deployed armament). Oh and the sounds it made gave me the shivers (gotta love that howl).
I know that there’s at least one Airwolf being actively developed and maybe there are even two. The first one can be checked on this youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@Virago25. The second Airwolf is (hopefully still) being developed by Alan Devins. Although there has been no news on his progress for quite a while.
