I haven’t seen any helicopter in the skies or on the ground. I have been flying around some of the busiest airports, I only see airlines. Why?
Are you referring to AI or Multiplayer traffic?
I’m not sure if there are generic models added in the sim files (like the pointy nosed twin and four engine jets) to render helicopters.
As for FlightAware API - I know it tracks fixed wing but I’ve not seen it track rotary wing traffic.

In multiplayer mode I should see other players in helicopters. In sim you would think they don’t even exist because you never see helicopters anywhere.

Mindfully, other than the new airports/scenery I have not installed or kept any of the new helicopters or gliders. Ideally they shouldn’t be co-dependent on installing the Guimbal/407 etc. So I suspect it will be a while before you see them in AI.
Slightly OT - if you’d like to see gliders/helos/etc., there is a very inexpensive add-on called VFR Traffic on Simmarket. I see a lot of helo traffic after that. And they are collision enabled, so they really are hazards.
I seen a lot of helicopters.. therefore exist e.g. also reports like the Bell 407 has static rotor in multiplayer.
In case it is same as with mods ( e.g. H135 / H145 / B-47 / etc ) the packages must be installed, otherwise you not see it. But I understood thats the case.
Just try some of the existing Heli-pads and may be choose “All players”, may be more helicopter-pilot not choose Live-weather ( a guess ).

I too have seen plenty of helicopters. I always use RealTime/Multiplayer and never AI. Maybe the problem is in AI traffic.
Are there any oil rigs to land on? I haven’t been able to find one, yet. If there are, what do I search for on the world map?
There is new Third Party scenery called North Sea Industry or something like that. They have solid rigs.
I had a helicopter fly right over me while I was taxiing to the runway. Way cool!

Technically the newly introduced in-game helicopters cannot yet be spawned as „AI objects“, for some technical limitation or the other. For sure not via SimConnect. Asobo confirmed this in the developer forum.
So no helicopter „AI traffic“ either.
But I guess you will be able to see „multiplayer helicopters“ (so yes, I wish Asobo would at least allow us to create the models via SimConnect, as this seems to be technically possible already).
UPDATE: to clarify, I am referring to the newly introduced helicopter models. Existing 3rd party helicopters (that are based on the old / their own helicopter flight model) can be spawned via the SimConnect API just fine.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this matter. I myself am addicted to recently released Vision Jet and not a big fan flying helicopters 
However, I hope to see them in the skies, it will make MSFS more realistic.
