Obviously this can be done by finding out with a quick search and changing a little bit of code in the camera.cfg file. But why on earth did they not include a section in the camera setting to easily create wind views in the sim. I’m talking about creating custom views using CTRL and whatever key you want to assign.
They have gone out of their way to create the interior window on the 787 for example so obviously knew people would want wing views. But why did they not allow this in the sim. Instead people were left to figure this out and needed to change code to do it.
No idea why this was overlooked. You are right in that I and many others had to edit a file to get the camera outside then save the views but they lack the windscreen effect of the default wing view where water rolls on the window (shame this cannot be added to custom wing views).
Again, hopefully this is something longer term they can work on and fix to allow people to enjoy especially useful when replays will be added to the sim.
Which aircraft are you talking about? The default A320 has 2 wing views from the interior that can easily be accessed by pressing the Switch to Drone Cam button, then switch to the Cockpit/exterior button which if done on the Drone Camera will switch into Fixed camera mode, then use the previous fixed camera button to give you the wing view.
Once that’s setup in your flight. Pressing the Switch to Drone Cam button will instantly bring you back to the cockpit. And everytime you press it, you will go back and forth between Cockpit view and wing view.
This is a video of me doing the camera mode switches as I explained above. And if you look at 15:47 mark, you’ll notice that my camera switches instantly from exterior view straight to wing view, by pressing the same “Toggle Drone Cam” button. If you continue on to look at 18:22 as I do my flight control checks. I also press the “Toggle Drone Cam” button while in the cockpit to instantly bring me to the wing view to look at the ailerons and spoilers and flaps. Once I’m done, I press it again to bring me back to the cockpit.
I never had to do any camera.cfg editing. But to be fair, it is FBW A32NX mod, and they’ve added the extra wing-views as part of the mod on top of the default Asobo wing views with the interior windows. But I never need to do camera.cfg editing myself.
But other aircraft might not have the same wing view.
Nevertheless this is still a super clunky way of doing things. Might be more acceptable if they allowed you to easily save new fixed views but the only way to do this is through the cfg at the moment. I agree with OP the way the custom cameras work in this sim needs a bit of a rework.
Ehh, once you get use to it, it becomes muscle memory. a few thumb clicks over a predetermined path within a few seconds, and you’re on the wing views by default. Then after that, just a single button press to switch back and forth.
You can create 10 custom views per aircraft, and switch between them at a keystroke. It’s very easy to do.
The configuration is stored in a text file, but you do not need to touch that file if you don’t want to. It’s all driven through the keyboard.
So if I were doing it I would position the camera where I wanted it, then hit the sequence to store that position as custom camera 1, then repeat for the other side in camera 2. I could then use the sequence to switch between those views at will, and probably store those as a hotkey on my Streamdeck.
By default, CTRL+ALT+1 will save to custom camera 1, and ALT+1 will load that view. These sequences can also be customised. So if you set them up on the keyboard, you could change the button to recall them to a joystick button, hat switch, and so on.
I must confess I have not tried creating a custom view from one of the outside views, and then save that as a custom view. You’ve tried that, and it doesn’t work?
On another note, as someone who doesn’t fly airliners, what is this thing with wing views?
Yeah it’s not bad but not as good as just being able to bind a key to that specific view. With the fixed views you always have to switch and then scroll through them right? In XP for example you can you can assign any view that can be accessed at any time. So I have 0-9 and F1-F12 all bound to different views. Super easy.
The thing with wing views for me is having that perspective from a passengers point of view. It’s basically the only view you get as a passenger, unlike the panoramic view of the cockpit. If doing a long flight on autopilot it’s sometimes good to look out of the window as if you were a travelling passenger. Just adds to the simulation experience I suppose.
That makes sense. If you use those flight recording packages, I would imagine its the only way to put together a video of landing, and taking off as flying the plane from that perspective would be very difficult.
At most, you only need 2 keys. One to switch to fixed cam mode, another to switch to the fixed cam you want. Once you are seeing a fixed cam number. If you switch between cockpit view and fixed cam view. You can go straight to the last fixed cam position with just a single key. So it’s either a single key at least, plus another key if you want to choose a different one. So it’s just 2 keys at most.
You then have create the view and bind it to a custom camera. For me then its a 1 click to switch between cockpit and wing views. It would have been nice to have the option to turn on the window effects on these cameras but alas it cannot be done. I do have some nice wing views though.
