Why do I have fly over the runway first before landing?

Practice IFR approaches into non-towered airports in VFR conditions are extremely common in some areas. It’s not like we can always keep our competency/proficiency/recency up in actual IMC (especially when FIKI comes into play during winter months), and sometimes the towered airport (if there’s even one nearby) isn’t going to allow practice approaches, anyway. Either way, I’d always consider what’s happening in the pattern and not just barrel in as if I owned the place.

If I’m shooting an approach into a non-towered airport that has traffic, I will usually fly the approach to circling minimums and either go missed or break off and join the pattern, whichever way is safest. And if we’re doing IFR work in VMC, we carry a safety pilot, anyway, who helps with separation, etc. All part of aeronautical decision making.
