Why hasn't the quality of photogrammetry improved in the last 5 years?

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:
is it a help?

I’m as critical as anyone when it comes to this unfinished product. The Japan photogrammetry was one of the first to be done in 2020 (WU1!) and it was quite terrible and the the data was from 2014 to boot. But now its unbelievably better, updates with ~2021/22 data and is across a truely massive 9800X3D-mainthread-busting area - Kanto (almost all of Kanto, encompassing the already huge 23ku of Tokyo but also Saitima, Utsunomiya, Narita and Yokohama areas) Osaka, Hiroshima, Sapparo..

Kudos is due to them for this effort.

It’s not perfect, but these new PG areas are improving in time.

Edit - No mention of Japanese cities as next CU update (CU12 will be in Europe somewhere) Would be dissapointed but then I remember how long I’ve been here and dissapontment is a very close friend !!

The Japanese update was disabled without any announcement after just a few days.
Many players were delighted and then disappointed.
It was a desert-like white color, so I hope it will be fixed and enabled again.

Yeah, the Japanese update was great, really big. Such a shame they just disabled it without any word.

I think (I HOPE) that it will be re-released during Tokyo Game show in around end of September this year.

It needed some adjustments from what I quickly saw while it was available, like the desert-color Taru mentioned. Some buildings textures were low quality. Uji, between Kyoto and Nara, was completely missing autogen and PG (hopefully it will be PG)

But with it being easily the largest photogrammetry update by area to be released I could let those slide. I flew over most of Tokyo, Saitama, Osaka and Kyoto .. it was quite incredible! When you live here and can see how detailed and huge the PG areas were, it really was a pleasent suprise only for it to be gone as quickly as it appeared.

Sorry, but then there is something wrong with your system - my old system with a 9900K and a 3090 (non Ti) was able to run the sim on all Ultra, with a TLOD of 400 fluidly, consistently - even on bigger airports. My benchmark was/is La Guardia and NY city in general, also London.

When 2020 was released, I was using a 9900K with an Nvidia 1080, and in some ways it was smoother back then, than now.

Asobo have adjusted the sim a lot since then.

Had a look back at the post and the reason is they are using a 7950X3D so pretty close to max level CPU. I think the 5090 is currently free of bottlenecking but every system is bottlenecked by something in the Dev Mode report which simply points to the lowest common denominator even if the system is working up to a capped FPS level with resources to spare. That said, this was quite an old post (March) so may well have been some odd things going on in whichever Beta was out at that point.

You misunderstand. When I said “bottlenecked” I meant that that I’ve done a LOT of testing and determined that my GPU is what sets the limits. I’ve very happy with overall performance using DLSS 4 Quality with mostly Ultra settings on my 4K monitor, live weather, and FSLTL running.

Things are very smooth and stutter-free in all aircraft in all conditions (except for landings at some airports - something that I don’t believe hardware will fix.) Generally, I get 50-80 FPS, and it’s rare to see < 40 FPS. The last time I had a CTD was when I was experimenting with DDR5-8000. I went back to 6000 MT/s.

I’ve simply identified that a GPU upgrade would do more good than a CPU, RAM, storage, or motherboard upgrade. I’ve toyed with the idea of upgrading my 7950X3D, but (like when using TAA) the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Happy flying! :airplane:

Ah I see - then yes I misunderstood the post - sorry for that. :upside_down_face:

The posts talking about about melted buildings etc, in photogammetry areas are, without doubt, not univeral. I have a very good, but definitely not state-of-the-art, PC and I have none of that in FS2020. I don’t run everything on “ultra” and don’t feel I need it. The scenery looks great, aside from the normal scenery bugs still in 2020. Could it be that trying to run everything with such high resolution causes this? And is it worth it? The diference, for instance, between High and Ultra- is it THAT noticeable and worth the glitches?
Or am I barking up the wrong tree and these anomalies are just due to different compatibilty between each of our systems? I’m strictly talking PC here. XBox, by its nature, is going to be more limited and less tweakable than a PC.

It doesn’t matter how good you computer is if the source data is at fault, and I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of reported cases are just that, and there are no issues at the user end.

Melted buildings is down to how heavy the plane/chooper you fly is for the system to run and how heavy that specific area is to run/stream.

The older cities can be very melted with a third party aircraft, but should be fine in ms/Asobo planes, but maybe not the airliners.

The newer is way less stress on the ststem but can still be melted in the wrong aircraft.
So it all depends on what aircraft and city and of course internetspeed.
If you have melted buildings its one of those that is the problem.

If you just sit there, and wait long enough, and it still doesn’t recover, then it’s the data at the other end. Not your computer, or your connection.

To put it another way, pick an area with bad PG, then wait for someone from the community to paste an image of the same place with better PG shown.

GPS co-ordinates would be helpful for any testing along these lines.

Hmm… seems a bit of a stretch to say the vast majority of problems come solely from the source data and not the user’s system. I think a good majority come down to things like system settings, network stability, or conflicting add-ons.

Then we need examples. If you are right at least one user should be able to present pristine PG imagery, while the other(s) has melted buildings.

Even if you have a terrible connection, sitting in the same place for 5 minutes would be ample time for any scenery to download. If it hasn’t downloaded by then, its not going to because it doesn’t exist.

There appears to be the idea that somehow there is PG data out there that looks as good as hand crafted, and if you get the melted stuff your system or connection has issues. I don’t believe that to be the case.

There are good examples, as well as bad examples of PG out there though. I’ll show mine if you show me yours.

If my memory is correct, I recall that in one of the early 2024 Developer Livestreams (not sure which one & don’t have the time to find it right now, sorry) Sebastian mentioned a problem where requests for data were “timing out” (my words) and not being fulfilled. So, no matter how long you sat in one spot waiting for data to arrive & be processed, it never would.

This may still be happening, & the cause for some of the PG issues users are experiencing.

Yes, colours could do with a touch up, but going by the other photogrammetry areas, I’m not so sure they will.

I also noted that blank patch between Kyoto and Nara. Did you go over to Biwa? They included that too, really nice to fly over in a helicopter.

This would be a great celebration for TGS. Maybe one of 2025’s ‘surprise’s mentioned on the roadmap?

This is London Tlod 700 Olod 400 and on so technically it is 350 Tlod and 200 Olod,
There is a little trick where you setup a 2nd window and make the main screen as small as possible but the second on your screen size
As you can see in the picture i oversized it on 2 49 inch screens but keep it in the window frame
In this way i do not think photogrammetry looks bad or degraded but it works differently
As lod is working or calculated different .
The photogrammetry file we dowload some kb big is only a key to use photogrammetry i think.

And here is a video bit dark and out of colours shots with my tablets

Also i have to say that main window which you cannot see on screens for now
Is running on the cpu igp on intel 285K processor
The second window the 2 49 inches are running from my arc A770 phantom gpu
I run between 15 fps near airports and 23 fps above the city
