The explanation is relatively simple…Quest 3 runs at 80Hrz so if you hitting 40fps you good. With my Varjo Aero I need 45+ fps as it runs at 90Hrz. The 5 extra fps is big and not easy to get in VR.
Fair perspective, but I mean you’re in a thread called “Why is my VR performance so terrible?”, so the people posting will mainly be those who identify with that statement, no one is trying to rain on anyone’s parade. It’s just venting of frustration.
And at least for me, the main reasons to keep talking about it are:
-
Confirm with others that it’s “not just you” (since there are actually also some people claiming similar or better performance) and hear about other people’s experiences. And yes, obviously this will involve some repetition.
-
Keep making noise in the hope that Asobo will hear and bring optimizations (not that likely, I know. But what can you do…)
-
Catharsis!
Hey,
Which Headset?
can you share your Settings SIM/OXTK with me please i have a similiar Setup.
Thx
What this tread tells me is MSFS has become ‘Elitist’.
For a decent 40 - 45 fps with a Vive Pro 2 or a Pimax Crystal, you need an expensive PC.
£2500 might do it before the peripherals and HMD.
Wealthy parents is what you need.
Most of us running those rigs are probably parents. While not poor, likely not wealthy either.
There have been some topics of people who have given up real life aviation for simming as even $5~$7K+ USD PCs are still more affordable.
If you had Wealthy parents, you’d probably be able to get a real TBM, Vision Jet or Cessna Citation. Heck a new Cessna 172 runs half a million.
Since the beginning, flight sim have been power angry and highly demanding on ressources. They are supposed to push the boundaries of what is possible at a given time. This is not new, and the quest for the magic bullet and the perfect tweak is a common denominator for all flight simming stuff. It is an expensive hobby for sure, but I’m not sure about “elitist” since they democratized the use of the entire planet at a rather high level of fidelity… I remember having to buy bits and pieces of the world in Orbx, hell, I remember “flying” around polygons in Chicago… The beginning of FS2020 was pretty bad too in terms of VR performance. I’m guilty of assuming that they can transfer and implement the fixes and knowledge from FS2020 to 2024, but I’m starting to think I might be wrong in that matter. As for specific VR issues, I guess we’ll have to wait for the fixes, we are apparently not very high on the priority list. That being said some of the base fixes are also benefitting VR. But I guess, I’m lucky, my expectations are pretty low, so I make do with what I have at the moment.
I know.
I had a relative who was an officer at RAF Wittering, Cottesmore and then Shawbury.
He was in command of a fleet of Plessey Simulators in the 1990s. This was the inspiration for me to take some flying lessons.
The Plessey Sims had ‘string’ land contours of different shades of brown, and the sky was blue, like the Artificial Horizon in an aeroplane.
The lads who defended our Isle, trained on these.
The training was
1/ Coping with a systems failure.
2/ Try new manouvers.
My job at the time was to emissions test cars on a chassis dynamometer.
I had to follow a scrolling vertical line on the screen with a horizontal moving cursor that corresponded to speed.
No roads, trees or houses to look at.
At lunchtime, we played MS Fight Sim 2.
4070 TI S here, 7800x3d, 32 GB RAM, I tried VR these days for the first time with the quest3, and - I was a bit disappointed. DLSS is working fine with medium/high settings, but there are these shining areas (between branches and bushes) - TAA is totally giving me stutters - although very fine texture - I did not had the patience to play with the settings of TAA yet to get best performance, though I feel very low seetings.
but - reading you guys here - I will give 2020 a shot again - I tweaked it to a perfection, had a lot of bug reports, took the game to the edge in 2D.
generally 2D is performing much better in 2024 which is a pity reading the VR experiences here. but hoping what we went through in 2020 - improvements after some downturns and patience of some months ![]()
Flying in VR I was experimenting in the 777f just released and I was flying with ASW off. The FPS was superb, reaching the dizzy heights over London at 45fps.
When I looked down at my EFB and started to zoom into EGLL my fps plummeted to 14.
I then had to apply 45fps forced in oculus tray to reach again my true fps which it did.
I repeated the process and again it dropped - again I repeated.
Dude my 4090 is at 40% how 5090 gonna help? The game optimisation is ■■■
Really? What resolution? When I still had FS24, my 4090 was always at 85%+, often higher.
But yeh, optimized it is not.
Something amiss with your setup, my 4090 sits between 85 - 100% utilisation
Have just tried beta SU1 and the latest DLSS4 but VR is still a wildly inconsistent jerky mess with fps ranging from 20 to 55 depending on which direction I look in, so won’t be using 2024 for the foreseeable.
Is your graphics card running at 16x in it’s slot? You can check this in GPUz - it will probably idle at 4x or 8x so you need to check it while doing the inbuilt GPU stress test.
Are the crippling VRAM issues even worse with VR?
Does the Quest use USB instead of DisplayPort? Wireless? Could be a factor.
Regarding PCVR generally:
I think the writing has been on the wall for a few years. PCVR is not the future and the major players know this. Why invest in PCVR if there is not substantial profit?
The days of running games and simulators from (wildly varying) PCs and a multitude other platforms are drawing to an end…we’re doomed ![]()
I think it unlikely there will be any major improvements for MSFS.
Found the problem thanks to the forums!
Turn off Fauna
Yes the Quest uses USB or wireless which is one of its downfalls.
For you information, I have quest3 + 4090 + i9-14700
With virtual desktop, I was never able to be totaly satisfied. GPU was crazy high and I never had enough resolution and frame rate.
I moved to link via USB using this video and everythings now so much better and fluid. my GPU is now at 75% with fenix 320 with faily good settings on either 2020 or 2024. This is not copy-paste style, it explain why.
I am a VR only guy with the Quest 3, first tip when running VR, turn ALL the graphical settings for desktop mode down to low end and drop the desktop resolution to 1920x1080. This has ZERO impact on the visuals in VR but it does free up a lot of headroom in the headset. Second, use virtual desktop. Meta Quest link is AWFUL for MSFS, Virtual Desktop is the way to go. Third, download the Open XR Toolkit and companion app. Virtual Desktop has its own version of Open XR and using it will increase performance. Fourth, switch from AV1 10-Bit codec to H264+, while you will lose a little visual fidelity H264+ is less demanding on the headset. Fifth, Use DLSS and Balanced for the best visuals/performance balance. You will need to change the secondary scaling in your MSFS usr.cfg file from 1.0 to 1.5 to restore clarity in the instrument panels. Sixth, Turn Synocronious Space Warp on and set to ALWAYS. Space warp is the Virtual desktop version of Motion Reprojection and it will give you a MASSIVE jump in performance. Let me know if this helps and I am willing to help in any way I can.
