Well I’m delighted we are finally getting photogrammetry for Budapest but I understand your frustration. I expect we may see a Eastern Europe part II with Poland, the Baltics, Romania etc…
i dont think so cause you can get all the terrestrial data from Google earth too.
Slovenia and Hungary (both included) also border with Ukraine + everything is on Google and other sources so I don’t think that’s a factor.
It’s just a decision they made, they have to cut it off somewhere.
Google also sourced it somewhere. But if they have it that means it is available. I was only commenting the statement that “it’s not available”. It is and from many sources.
Or combine it with the other countries on the Baltic Sea - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Would imagine Belarus and Kaliningrad might get a pass …
Joerg has spoken often about their complex process, including licensing aerials, getting local Gov permission for data, commissioning TIN data collection, AI image processing, TIN cleanup etc.
NOTE: Edited due to misunderstanding quoted poster.
I think he meant if google has it, so could Microsoft…
Copy that, I have edited my post accordingly but kept my point about the complexity of the data collection/digestion process for MSFS according to Joerg.
No i meant the Post before that Lack of Poland in WU is due to war conflict Zone in Border country. But If anyone had bad intensions using the data, they could get it from Google earth anyway so this cant be the reason.
A lot of the photogrammetry in MSFS is outdated anyway. Around my hometown a whole neighbourhood that’s been around for over 5 years is missing completely. Fields and meadows everywhere.
Also using Google or Bing maps data won’t give you a tactical advantage. For that you need satellite data that’s only hours old instead of years
Actually, Poland has a pretty good and public domain (i.e free to use for any purpuse ) govermental made orthophotomaps and phtogravemetry photo sets in IR, VIS, and Lidar, digital terrain model , detailed digital elevation model, and so on. Just check: Dane - Geoportal Krajowy
You probably meant Slovakia, not Slovenia ![]()
I’m from Czechia, so I’m quite happy for this WU but I was also disappointed by omitting Poland from this update. I guess it will be in some future WU together with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Hopefully the next one but I slightly doubt about that.
My guess was that it would have been just too big all at once. It will probably get its own WU with the Baltic States. It would make more sense, and get proper attention. This way all the relevant countries get proper attention.
I would have been surprised if they included all Eastern European countries in one go.
To have Central Europe update and then exclude Poland from it is shocking.
Maybe they check how many users are from which country, and we Poles just failed in this contest. The aviation, especially GA, is much more lively in Czechia vs. Poland.
I would also guess that the total area of covered countries is smaller or just slightly bigger than Poland itself, so it sounds better to have several countries covered vs. just one with the comparable effort.
Foreign people probably know more as their potential destination about Prague, Budapest, Dubrovnik vs. Warsaw or Cracow. Poland is also not terrain-feature rich as the covered countries.
So, together with Romania (not counting Ukraine due to obvious reasons) Poland will be probably one of the last big-area European countries, not covered by the World Updates (yet).
I’d like to give a hint of maybe less known in general but quite famous in avitation circles and very picturesque places in Poland I’d, and probably many others would like to have treated with care in Poland WU:
- EPZR - Żar mountain / Międzybrodzie Żywieckie - home of Mountain Gliding School - home airfield of Sebastian Kawa . Sloped runway on the slope of Żar mountain which has a Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (an artificial lake at the top of the mountain) - whould be great if landmarks there were modeled. Ground imagery around this area requires updating in MSFS.
- Bezmiechowa in Bieszczady mountains - famous sloped runway used for gravity glider takeoffs.
Place sadly is not included in MSFS at all, also ground imagery around this area requires updating in MSFS.
Another similar gravity takeoff place is in Jeżów Sudecki - Start szybowca w Jeżowie Sudeckim (4K) - YouTube
- I think Giewont (partly due to legend of the sleeping knight) and area Rysy mountains are most recognizable Polish mountains that would be great if would be modelled manually, also area of Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich is also quite famous in Tatry mountains.
A few examples why we Poles would like to have WU for Poland.
Those white/light grey patches are clouds baked into ground tiles. Looks awful from high and low altitudes.
Or it will be a separate world update like Poland+Baltic States. It’s a big place, so it would always make perfect sense that Poland gets its own update.
My original thinking is that Poland is big enough to have a world update all of its own, but I fear that if they leave it too long, it might end up being part of the Greater Russia update, though I certainly hope not.
