I often heard that you should turn off frame gen if you have a rtx4070, but why? Doesnt it jst give you extra FPS?
There is a lot of non-sense on the internet. Enjoy Frame Generation.
Some people are bothered by fake frames which is what FG does and can introduce artifacts.
If you like it, use it. It does use much more GPU power and my GPU stays cool when using it, but my CPU temp does go up slightly.
In 2024, for some reason I don’t understand, I have less FPS than without FG. I think it’s a driver issue, but I need to do some tests first. I’m pretty sure I didn’t have these performances issues with the driver before DLSS4 released.
Edit : Came back on driver 566.36 and there is DEFINITELY somethring wrong with the next few drivers versions which kills framegen for some reason
As @WaterLattice34 said - if you like it, use it. Best practice for using frame gen is to cap your fps at one half of your monitors refresh rate. That way, after your fps is doubled, it won’t exceed your monitors capability to display the frames. For example, if you’re doubling your fps to say 70fps and your monitors refresh rate is 60Hz, then the 10fps over 60 are dropped by the monitor. You also want to turn on some type of variable refresh rate (VRR) such as G-sync/freesync which will help reduce any tearing onscreen.
Thats what I do. I am using a cheap TCL TV, which I actually like, and it only has a 60hz refresh rate. So I halve that in the sim settings and end up with 30fps but it’s really smooth…most of the time. Also my CPU and GPU don’t work as hard so they run cooler.
Vsync doesn’t work with FG. So what I do is turn on Vsync so I can set the frame rate limit to 50% of my monitors refresh rate. Then I turn on FG and use DLSS on Auto. TAA works well as well even though it doesn’t work with FG That’s what works best for me.
Sounds like when CD’s first came out. Purists swore they sounded awful compared to records. I don’t think anyone can detect the inserted frames, its just smother.
Or when records were compared to cassettes. Back in the day I had a Pioneer cassette deck with DBX noise reduction. It had a freq response of 20 to 20000hz. Absolutely no tape hiss. It was perfect.
FG is a personal choice. The only way I see artifacts is the ones pointed out on YouTube or whatever. I mostly do prefer TAA but I still halve my frame rate and have really good results.
It’s not really about a specific GPU model like the RTX 4070, but the fact that Frame Generation (FG) can cause stuttering in MSFS 2024. Whether you keep it on or off is entirely up to your preferences. For example, my eyes can easily spot fake frames, so I keep FG disabled. Plus, since I have an RTX 4090, I don’t really need it.
