Will 3rd Party Products Already Obtained Outside MSFS Marketplace Work on Xbox?

The question in the title is self-explanatory.
Apologies if already asked somewhere else - if so, Moderators please feel free to move this.
I suspect it is an unanswered issue at the moment.
I do not really want to start a long on-going discussion thread about whether or not this may or may not, or can or cannot, happen.
Just want to check wether there is a definitive answer yet or not.
Cheers fellow simmers/gamers!

Thereā€™s no community folder or any way to get stuff purchased from 3rd party sellers onto the Xbox, nor will there be. The only stuff youā€™ll be able to use is stuff you purchased via the marketplace, assuming:

  1. You have the MS Store version (Steam doesnā€™t count)
  2. Devs of said add-ons are onboard for crossplay (most will be)
  3. the marketplace add-on is Xbox compatible. Not all will be.

Thanks @Crunchmeister71. In my supreme naivety and belief in ethics before money (!!!) it may be that MSFS could use mutual cooperation, determination, innovation, systems and technology to allow products already obtained outside the Marketplace to then be obtained for free (or a small fee) from the Marketplace!!!??? Or something like that.

My last job before retirement was an appointment as CEO of a loss-making business and my Board was always on about money. I always said that with me it is service first followed by money, albeit closely followed, and if they did not like it, well then I am outta there. After 13 years of growing profits every year, I retired.

Where there is a will, there is a way?

Cheers

Xbox is less of a ā€œwalled gardenā€ than PlayStation when it comes to community content so we may see something open up for that.
However I think with regards 3rd party paid mods bought from external vendors you will be out of luck.

I would love to be proved wrong but I donā€™t think Microsoft are particularly flexible when it comes to such things and even if they were their hands may be tied by vendor agreements or competition legislation.

Where thereā€™s a willā€¦.thereā€™s either a way or a dead person

Iā€™ve been wondering about that. Iā€™m not an Xboxer but Microsoft is pushing to make Xbox run regular Windows software. I donā€™t know how far along that effort is but Iā€™ve seen it mentioned multiple places.

If that is true then directory structures under the hood are likely similar, if not identical. If you canā€™t break out of the Xbox software jail, it might be possible to just remove the drive and mount it on a regular system to then copy the files into place. Not very convenient. This also requires there be no changes to FS functionality. Who knows if they build with flags to disable checking for add-ins or other PC things?

But that push to unify OSes might make it possible even if a pain?

In thinking more about it, MS may check to make sure itā€™s all just MS/Asoboā€™s software running. Adding mods will always carry some risk to the host OS. On XBox it is very much in Microsoftā€™s interest to keep foreign code and possible attacks off the platform. This very hackable PC application may pose unique challenges for the Xbox side of the house.

Sony also runs a closed platform though you used to be able to build pretty powerful compute clusters out of Playstations. Maybe there are active hardware hacking communities but I donā€™t think many do? Anyone know?

Microsoft is in much less control on the PC side and though they would probably love to, they canā€™t restrict what software you run on the PC/Windows of the house. Thatā€™s long-standing tradition and precedent and they already lose those kinds of court cases.

I did find one book on hacking the Xbox so itā€™s not unheard of. But they also say their original publisher canceled printing it out of fear of DMCA lawsuits so apparently not so popular.

This will be interesting to watch.

I think there is zero chance of this ā€˜off-pisteā€™ activity being part of any Xbox approved process.

Thatā€™s not to say that add-ons are forever barred, but they would need to be integrated into the in-sim marketplace or as an official update.

Totally agree. I donā€™t see any way MS would ever condone that and may even be looking for it.
