Windows 11 24H2 and MSFS: observations, insights, issues and tips

Hi,

just here to say I am also affected by nasty fps drops with strange audio crackle at the same time with 24H2. Happens over crowded area (my test flight is over Berlin). These stutters were definitely not present prior to 24H2 for me, everything was running fine.

9800X3D, 4080S, 64GB @6000

Sidenote: I had a 7800X3D until some days ago, same issue.

I tried so may things, except for reverting back to 23H2. As I am long past the “go back” point, It would require clean reinstall which I want to avoid at this point.

Frustrating. :frowning:

Edit: I gave up and reinstalled 23H2. Did a short test flight, problem solved, not a single stutter/sound crackle.

Does anyone know if anyone is planning on writing a driver for the HP Reverb to wok again, with its own software, or is. it just landfill material now thanks to Microsofts Green save the earth policies?

For users of Windows 11 with 24H2, it’s the landfill option :disappointed:

The most authoritative reply to the question that I have read came from @mbucchia on this forum a little over a year ago:

Last Tuesday I decided to upgrade to 24H2
Due to some missing/corrupted files in the WinSxS folder I had no other option than to upgrade to 24H2.
After updating, I did a couple of flights of two hours each and found no problems compared to the previous version 23H2. Even the FPS and audio quality are the same as before.
This is my system: CPU i9-13900K, RAM 64GB, GPU RTX4090, MB ASUS
ROG STRIX Z690

Again i made the update to 24H2 (blocking the update is no solution for a long time period) - so the stutters were back as before.

I tried many things and i found a SOLUTION for my PC:
What did the trick was disabling HAGS (Settings/System/Display/Graphics) - now it is almost as smooth as on the previous version 23H2

I made 2 Testflights with almost no stutters, so i hope that problem is fixed (at least for my setup) - perhaps it helps anybody else facing the same problem,

Thought HAGS was needed for frame generation. By the way, no stutters here with 24H2.

This is what I am doing for the last ~three weeks, by far less stutters daily visible largely with demanding aircraft and kicked out that Nvidia App for good.

Windows 11, update 24h2 removes WMR thereby rendering any WMR VR headset worthless! I found this out the hard way by getting a new computer with 11 on it, and having my Reverb G2 fail to turn on. It took several hours of searching on the internet to find this issue with Windows 11. I also believe that Microsoft may have conspired with Meta to exclusively support the Quest 3/3S VR headsets by keeping a version of WMR available only for them. Microsoft keeps screwing the end users by forcing upgrading to 11, thereby making all of us with perfectly good computers having to buy new ones so we can get 11 on them, and then turning about 80,000 VR user headsets into expensive paper weights.

You can still revert to 23H2 and block future updates.
The ISO is available here and can be used to create a bootable USB with Media creation tool: https://os.click/en/Windows:Windows_11:23H2:22631.4169:Multi-Edition:en-us:x64

I never used the Nvidia App and read about some issues with that at the moment, so good choice to not use it at the moment.

As far as i know you only can pause updates to a maximum of a few weeks - after that time you are forced to update…so therefore i downloaded 24H2 again and tried to find a workaround for my system. And with HAGS set to OFF my sim is as smooth as it used to be as it was before that update…be aware that with HAGS set to OFF you can NOT use FRAME GENERATION - at least thats what i read about it (i don´t use FG at all on my system). Good for you, my stutters after the 24H2 update were massiv, Greets Markus

Exactly. I use a little free utility called incontrol that allows you to manage updates.

They don’t force anyone to upgrade Windows or buy new computers. I have W11 24H2 running on a 10 years old laptop and another one on a desktop with i7-6700 CPU.

I also believe that Microsoft may have conspired with Meta to exclusively support the Quest 3/3S VR headsets by keeping a version of WMR available only for them.

Sure, and the earth is flat. Meta headsets don’t need WMR, they use their own drivers.

If I understand correctly, you tried to block the Windows 23H2 update to version 24H2 using the instructions from the YouTube video you linked, but this did not successfully prevent the update?

No, i paused all updates within Windows, but the maximum time for that is only over a period of a few weeks. After that period you are forced to update. So i decided to face that fact and downloaded 24H2 before the end of the pausing period in order to find a solution for my system. And disabling HAGS in Windows works perfectly fine. The instructions from the youtube video (BTW Thanks for that) are not a long time solution for me, so i tried to deal with the fact that sooner or later i have to update anyway…really happy it is working again as it used to on 23H2 now  Greets, Markus

Thank you for your response. I’m glad to hear that it’s working again. I just wanted to mention that I suggested blocking the update to version 24H2 via GPO.

I didn’t suggest YouTube or provide any YouTube link.

Ah sorry, but thanks for your help anyway  Greets, Markus

Only opened the Nvidia App maybe two times, I did not like to get offers and reminders for what so ever. For my little things with Krita which I am doing I do not need to adjust a setting, I leave by default by Windows. I uninstalled it because it always wants to run in background for no reason. Also you have to register which I do not like.
I got the Nvidia control panel, which I just left in its default settings. Now and again having a look which driver is installed or some spec.

No I am in the Windows insider beta, I needed to make running a program for astronomy, there is been no way around with a Chinese Android App(Asiair App).
Right by now I am queued for unenrollment, some AMD driver killed the installation with a total crash.
In a couple of months they will have a solution for it. So I can block any updates easy for months. There are also numerous instructions how to stop definite updates on the web.

I am not particularly with a huge know how, only I look up things when I need to solve certain compatibility issues.

Now this one in 24H2 I had no choice, even my backup did not help me and had supplement issues with it as it does not want to run. Ok there are third party but I am not so convinced.
For the moment I can not afford the time to make more fresh installations of OS and erase anything.
Anyway these days I believe that they are already pretty good.
Generally is it rare that I got trouble somewhere with the machine and its software.
But of course FS is somehow quite different, also on my so called Xbox X backup machine. Even on this box which runs always fine without minor issues anywhere, I got problems only with the FS2020, hardware related mostly. Ok that is here off-topic.

I didn’t have any stutters, but I was getting a CTD in a different app, and the recommendation was to update my BIOS. I have a relatively new ASUS ROG 870E-E motherboard, but I did find 2/28 BIOS to load. So I did that.

Afterwards, I was getting all sorts of stutters in 2024. Even at the loading screen the trailer playing.

This weekend I went to see if there was a newer BIOS, and there was one from 3/11. So I loaded that BIOS. Now 2024 is smooth again, even on the loading trailer.

So you might want to see if there is a newer BIOS for your motherboard, or a firmware update.

Did update my BIOS as well to the newest one, made no change and stutters were there…but thanks for that hint, Greets Markus
