Windows 11 25H2/24H2 and MSFS: observations, insights, issues and tips

KB5089573 is an early beta/preview release of next month’s June update. It’s completely optional. If your system is running fine, there’s no need to install it. You can simply wait for the final version to be released next month.

Is there any benefit in 2026 to still run Windows on its “own” drive and the sim on its own? This is my current setup but just curious.

Yes - it still makes sense. If Windows breaks and you need to format C and reinstall it, your MSFS packages stay on the other drive so you don’t have to download everything again. Same with the Community folder

To add to @TenPatrol 's comment above, it allows you to make separate full backups & restores of your C: (Windows) and MSFS (e.g. D:) drives. Being able to restore one or the other independently can be useful at times. If you are not making regular backups, I recommend that you at least consider doing so.

On my system, backing up either drive (MSFS is streamed) takes under 10 minutes. Same for a restore. This is far faster than a format / reinstall + reconfiguration of Windows or complete reinstall of MSFS & whatever addons you may have locally installed.

Roger that, was just thinking of simplifying the setup.

Anyone try this with FS2024?

Interesting. I barely have stutters nowadays, but will give it a try just in case. Occasionally I get a little single CPU spike stutter. Thanks for sharing!

Just trying it now.

I found I could disable CFG just for FlightSimulator2024.exe (instead of globally) in Settings > Privacy & Security > App & browser control > Exploit Protection Settings > Program Settings > Add Program to customize > by Program Name > FlightSimulator2024.exe > CFG Override > Off

I can’t tell if it’s better or not, because I just did a new clean install of Windows last week, with the new BIOS for my motherboard, latest NVIDIA 610.62, and latest 1.7.34.0 beta, and things are pretty smooth all around - but I’m not sure what to credit. I think Asobo have reduced LOD distances for some things like shadows, etc, in order to improve memory mangement. One thing I am noticing after I complained, was that MSFS now seems to be using more available RAM, and I think that is helping, perhaps more than other things.

I’m loaded in to the A330-300RR at RJTT, with High settings + TLOD 350 / OLOD 150, on triple 4K with TAA, and no LOD reduction, no stutters, I’m both relieved and amazed, actually. Just not sure how much effect the CFG has. Going to do a flight and see if I notice anything.

That does sound intriguing. I don’t tend to suffer from the random stutter issues that some get, only really seeing it when first spawning in, and all the assets are being loaded into memory.

But I’ll certainly give it a go, and report back.

That’s basically what the OP suggested already - disabling CFG only for .exe instead of turning it off globally.

Asobo are definitely tweaking the LOD. I even asked on the forum yesterday whether anyone else had noticed the LOD degradation and it turns out I’m not the only one.

That said, I think that’s a topic for the SU5.1 beta discussion rather than this thread.

Now the important part.

The Reddit thread is about 5 months old. If I remember correctly, around that time Windows had a bug causing stutters and performance drops in games. It was tied to admin and standard user accounts, but it didn’t affect the hidden Administrator account.

So it’s possible that one of the workarounds back then was messing with CFG.
