Windows 11 and Flight Simulator

As the next Windows OS is due for release this week, does anybody know if this latest version will play nicely with MSFS? Don’t want to go installing a new operating system if it’s not compatible with the software I use.

I saw a video of Linus playing several games on it, seemed like it worked absolutely fine.

I would be very surprised if there were any major issues, but it’s generally wise to wait a little before jumping on new things if you want a completely smooth and bug free experience.

Windows 11 will only be officially revealed this week, but it won’t be released until later this year, probably around October/November. Also, as far as we know it will be basically a Windows 10 update and will be brand new only in name. So while it is rebranded to Windows 11 it will remain fully compatible with everything for Windows 10 as well. It’s not a completely new system.

I wonder why they’d have to rebrand it? Why don’t just call it Windows 10 21H2 update?

So they can charge for it one assumes

Ohh man, do I have to buy it again?

I think the event showcasing it is on 24th June so we’ll find out if/how much they intend to charge for it then probably.

Microsoft wants to reinvigorate interest in Windows, and Windows 10 has become quite stale lately. With a completely new, more modern UI and a rebrand they can do just that. Technically it’s still the “21H2” update but it’s new and different enough to give it a new name.

Well they can do whatever they want with it. I’ve always clean install Windows whenever each update is released on day 1. And I’m still excited for this upcoming version. But I just wish that they don’t ask me to buy another license just because I want the updated OS. Especially since we’ve all been getting them for free.

Wait till the 24th, pretty likely we’ll know what their intentions are then and it’s only a few days away.

Perhaps we could even see them move to a free OS model supported by a usable and enticing windows store functionality. Wouldn’t that be something

So basically… what we already have right now…

Or do what Apple did. Release OSX v11, and still call it OSX, and not OSXI.

PS. I know they have been calling it MacOS for years, but I can’t think of anyone in I know in Mac support calling it anything other than OSX.

Will Win11 catch on? How about Win 1¹?

Not really no. Windows 10 isn’t free… If I build my son a computer today and I go to buy an official copy of windows 10 for it through normal distribution (ie not faffing with grey market stuff or buying a cheaper OEM license) it costs about 89 quid just for the home version.

I understand that many upgraded from older windows versions for free, but a new license for a new additional computer isn’t free at all. If you buy a new computer with W10 from an OEM or system builder, part of the cost you are paying is also for the windows license…

Also I don’t currently find the windows store enticing.

So no, not really like what we have now in my honest opinion!

Well, yeah, but you only need to buy the license once for one PC. And If you’re using the PC for 5-7+ years, having the same OS that gives out free major version releases, is a great deal to me. I don’t want to buy another copy of the OS license to be installed in the same PC just because I want the latest version.

I am not sure if this new version will impact at msfs performance. In reviews that I watched, they said that new windows is basically a “new skin” for w10… But, of course, it is still not the official version. Maybe they leaked only the “visual part” of this windows (just for an “accidental free advertising about new windows”).

I’d be willing to bet that even if it isn’t a free OS as such there will be free upgrade paths from W10, especially for the great unwashed like thee and me… They like to drive adoption and there’s no better way than making a free update path available, at least for a limited time period. Business license might be a different matter - they know that ultimately most businesses can’t keep using a deprecated OS and with W10 now set to be dropped in 2025 they will eventually have to change over anyway.

I think that was always the theory with W7/8 → W10, it was supposed to only be a free upgrade for a limited time (I think it was said to be the first year only) but kept on getting quietly extended and afaik is still going.

Yeh well I thought that MSFS would have DX12 at release for the same reason …

If Windows 21H2 has morphed in to Windows 11, then I would be surprised if MS are going to manage two versions of the same update i.e. Window11 RTM == Windows 10 21H2.

Going by that logic the Windows 11 update should be free for existing WIndows 10 owners.

And it probably will be.

I’ve installed msfs on Windows 11 and it works fine. Feels a bit less stuttery too…
