Working with someone - MSFS Basics for a Beginner

Is there anyone out there who is willing to work with me 1:1 to help me with MSFS 2020 best practices? I’m curious to work with someone on best ways to set up my keyboard/joystick, best ways to optimize my graphics, ways to use cameras/drones and how to best identify landmarks/pois while flying. I’m curious if there a simmers out there who give personal tutorials for hire?

YouTube is your friend.

That does sound like a large undertaking, effectively a brain dump of years of simming experience. And you won’t know for sure whether that person actually knows what they are talking about. I would agree that YT would be good place to start, as the video itself will be judged by the community as to whether it is accurate or even useful. At least for the more technical, PC related elements of your request.

There is no best setup. A lot comes down to preference. A friend of mine and me built the same PC together and we ended up woth different settings because he chases FPS while I prefer visuals as long as it‘s smooth. Also I fly different aircraft to him in both sims that we use and and and…

Youtube, definitely. You need to fiddle and try it out, there is not really a shorter shortcut than that.

1/ I am myself looking for support to set up Payment method for purchases from Marketplace.
For some odd reasons credit cards issued in Pakistan which are otherwise acceptable all over the world are not acceptable to MS.I am located in Pakistan and operate an Xbox to run MSFS.
2/ If this sitiuation is not going to change to accommodate clients/customers from Pakistan then what is the solution
3/ Can I set up my son’s credit card as new payment method issued in United Arab Emirates.
I think a large simmer community is frustrated by non- acceptance of a payment method otherwise acceptable worldwide.
Assistance from any quarter will be highly appreciated.

Are you able to buy an XBox/PC gift card from Amazon, for example? I have advised my brother to do that as a birthday gift. I can then redeem that gift to my account, and it appears as credit in the sim.

This. The best we can offer is general steps on how to tune to your tastes.

The key bindings and controller assignments are mostly personal preference. For me, I was used to FSX controls, so I have my custom controller profile set up to mimic that.

For graphics, turn on developer mode in the options menu, then use the toolbar to turn on the FPS counter (I think it’s in the display options in the dev toolbar), which will also show frame times. Don’t rely on an external monitor for the CPU load because those give a total core/thread load percentage and the sim runs primarily on only one thread. We see a number of comments about being confused that the sim reports main thread (CPU) limited despite something like Afterburner showing a low CPU workload.

What you want is to be GPU limited to minimize stutters. If you are main thread limited, you want to reduce traffic settings, terrain and object level of detail (TLOD and OLOD in the graphics settings), and/or increase the other graphics settings to put more load on the GPU. Adjusting the render resolution and render scale can also make dramatic changes in GPU load and frame rates. There is an option for DX11 and DX12 as well. There is no universal best option here and you’ll find both complaints and praises for both options. Here you’ll have to try both and see which works best for your specific system. If you have the ability to use Nvidia’s frame generation, you can try it, but there’s going to be artifacting. Some people don’t notice or don’t mind it, others have zero desire for it. Just pick the option that works best for you.

For testing, it can go a couple of ways. If you primarily fly one plane and location, you can do your testing there. If you want to tune for flying anywhere and in anything, then pick a complex aircraft like one of the airliners and spawn in at a major airport like KJFK, where you’ll have lots of AI air and ground traffic. This would be a worst case scenario, so if your settings are tuned for smooth flying here, you’ll get that or better performance anywhere. Just adjust based on the above principles to get a smooth performance that you are happy with. You don’t need or want to shoot for the highest FPS, but smooth frame times with minimal spikes and stuttering on screen.

If you start running add-ons and extra programs with the sim, then your settings will likely need to be retuned, especially if running add-on traffic. For example, if you want to use the FSLTL traffic add-on, it’s recommended to expect a 10-15 fps loss and to tune accordingly. I.e. If your target ideal frame rate is 45fps, then you’ll want to tune for at least 60 fps without FSLTL.

For POI’s, I leave the markers on in the assistance options because I don’t recognize most of them anyway. Lol. The camera options are user preference as well.

This should give you a good basis to start from and I won’t charge you a dime. If you need more help, feel free to ask. It’ll also help to know your system specs if you need help with performance tuning. I often joke this is more of a benchmark tool than a flight sim with how much tinkering I’ve done with it.

Absolutely agree with above statement and @Mooncatt3953 above. As you move forward with your learning curve, many in this forum will be happy to address specific questions and provide direction/options as this is a great community of those that love flight :small_airplane: :+1:.

While there is a learning curve, it is fun and gratifying to increase your own knowledge level with flying and the sim. I was born and grew up in the same home town as the Wright Brothers and the fact that 2 guys who owned a bicycle shop were able to discover and document the how to’s of flight was a great motivator for me personally. I finally jumped into the sim in 2020 after I retired and had time on my hands (that pandemic thing sure helped also!)

Just let us know how we can help - happy flying!

Or try this:

I have been one myself (see introduction in link) but dont have a lot of time at this moment.
Have helped a lot of people out with 1 on 1 introduction (for free) and so did many other co-pilots.
If you are interested in help, just sent them a message.
If you are not in a hurry and can wait for a couple of weeks, sent me a DM. Iam more than happy to assist.

A great community member that has some really nice live tutorials as well as some simming courses that provides 1:1 help is @Forder1702 - https://www.forderlearntofly.com

Hi where abouts are you I am based in the leicester area of the U.K. I have been running an I.T Business for 30 years and simming for 25 years! I have several clients i see and have setup Flight sim rigs, real cockpit layouts and VR systems. I also do remote support to several clients further away including real Airline pilots. tell me a bit about yourself and your setup. I mainly fly VR and have mine setup with 55 to 60fps inver smooth and sharp. 80 to 90fps on flat screens. But there is alot of tweaking wth DLSS drivers, registry and background services to run perfectly. Dave. CPSComputer.
