World photographer FS2024: Several POI 3D models missing in game (SU 1 beta regression)

*Update 2025-02-23 by author: By doing an A-B test I found that several (not all) issues described in this thread occur in SimUpdate 1 Beta 1.3.22.0 (and now in release 1.3.23), but were not present in original release 1.2.11.0.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue: The World photographer missions each have a cover photo, usually showing the place or point of interest you are about to visit. Several of them show the POI or landscape differently (usually better) than what you see when actually flying there in FS2024, sometimes the POI is missing altogether making it virtually impossible to complete the mission.

It looks as if these WP missions were designed maybe 2021/22 at a time when the FS world still looked differently, and subsequent World Updates or changes in FS2024 probably “broke” the missions by removing important 3D assets (e.g. rocks).

ICAO, coordinates, or specific location: Some example WP missions (photos below):

  • Landscapes of Europe → Preikestolen (also missing in release)
  • Notable rocks → Bear and rabbit summit (regression, exist in 1.2.11.0)
  • Notable rocks → Devil’s Tower (regression, 3D asset exist in 1.2.11.0)
  • World’s most famous monuments → Moai statues (There’s a separate bug thread for this already: Moai Statues Missing)
  • Notable rocks → Kicker rock (also missing in release, Screenshots see reply)
  • Notable rocks → Chimney Rock (regression, exists in 1.2.11.0, Screenshots see reply, prevents users from completing this mission in SU1 beta as the rock shape is essential here.)
  • Several bridges, see 2nd reply below.

This violates the WYSIWYG principle (What you see is what you get.)

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? None installed.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you? Always.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Select any of the missions above. look a the mission’s cover photo.
  2. Fly to the POI for the mission.
  3. Compare the scenery there with the cover photo. Notice the difference?

YOUR SETTINGS

  • SimUpdate 1 Beta (currently 1.3.22.0)
  • Photogrammetry ON
  • Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it? No
  • What GPU (Graphics Card) do you use? NVIDIA 3070 mobile
Further graphics settings see reply below.

MEDIA

Preikestolen

As discussed in Preikestolen at Lysefjord in Norway the 3D asset was pretty oversized. Now it’s completely gone (see below) and the Preikestolen is even unrecognizable since iits plateau is covered with trees where there are none.

Bear and rabbit summit

Devil’s Tower

The cover image shows the characteristic vertical basalt columns but in the game it appears just a solid rock, all the details are missing, even the sligtly bent shape.

Moai statues

(As said, there’s a separate bug report specifically for this already.)

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

There are more cases, obviously. and the “Notable Rocks” category holds quite a few of them becase missing rocks and mountains easily go unnoticed if there is no sufficient testing in place.

Þrídrangar lighthouse

The cover image for this mission:

And, funny enough, this lighthouse and helipad are even featured in the FS2024 intro video seen at every startup:

And this is what you really get (in FS2024 SU1 beta):
Update: It is there, just not at the photo point but 3km east, thus I didn’t find it. Sorry for the confusion this has caused.

Kicker Rock (León Dormido)

What you see…

… and what you get:

Chimney Rock

What you see…

… and what you get:

The big problem with Chimney Rock is that for the photo objective “With the Sun perfectly aligned with Chimney Rock’s tip” you probably need the correct 3D model. I tried to align the sun as requested (and had several attempts) but my images such as the one below was never awarded the star. I therefore assume that the missing 3D model makes this photo objective impossible to complete (except maybe with excessive try-and-error). Or there is another bug.

Int the end 4 of the 10 missions in the “Notable rocks” collection cannot be normally completed because of missing 3D models.

Hell, what’s going on here???

Started the “USA’s Most Spectacular Bridges” collections today.
Golden Gate and Brookly Bridge are fine - likely because they are part of a larger photogrammetry area.
However, the next bridges are all missing ore just visible as generic hideous bridges:

  • Mackinac Bridge (flat generic bridge there)
  • Sunshine Skyway Bridge (missing)
  • New River Gorge Bridge (generic bridge there) and
  • Navajo Bridges (only one generic bridge there, bridges from photogrammetry look like collapsed, see image below).
  • Haven’t tests the latter ones in the WP collection.
  • The Rainbow Bridge underneath the Niagara Falls seems to also have become a victem of this issue. (Not part of World Photographer, but anyway…)

This seems to be a systematic bug.

Relevant info/settings:

  • SimUpdate 1 Beta (currently 1.3.22.0) All bridges were fine (with custom 3D model) in the release 1.2.11.0.
  • Photogrammetry ON
  • Graphics settings:

Must be something wrong at your end. I landed (or tried to, in crazy winds it was impossible) the other day and it looks great just like the intro tbh.

Out of curiosity: Are you on the beta branch as well?

If not then everything’s clear. Most of the above listed POIs seem to be only missing in the current SU 1 beta, not on the latest release. I just reverted back and forth between the two (which is easy on Steam) and the difference is reproducible.

Weird one. At that time I wasn’t but I was in a multiplayer sesh with 2 friends that were and we were all seeing it fine. I’ll try again with this latest beta patch tomorrow and let you know.

And you are right, @Baracus250: Þrídrangar is there.
Only, it’s 3 km east of the photo marker on the map and compass (in World Photographer mode), so overlooked it - and the bad weather didn’t help either. And that I got the mission “completed” by photographing the empty ocean (at the photo marker) fitted perfectly to make me believe it is missing.
Anyway, I have removed Þrídrangar from the list of issues for this bug. The photo marker offset is obviously a different bug.

Thanks for your feedback.

Um, I don’t want to be rude, but I am pretty nervous about this regression bug in SU 1 Beta and really don’t want it to be in the next official release. Can anyone from the official developers acknowledge/confirm this issue. Currently the thread is not yet marked “bug-logged” so I have my doubts. I wouldn’t ask otherwise.
Any feedback - and even if the bug is considered low prio - is appreciated. Thank you.

SU 1 Beta 1.3.24.0 does not solve the issue. Many bridges and rock models are still missing.

Same issue. I’m tired of bugs in career mode, decided to complete Photo tasks but cannot! What the hell is this? Where is the bridge supposed to be there? FS doesn’t even register photos of this joke.

Switch to release branch and do the mission there as long as you can… that’s what I did.

Loaded 2024 for the 2nd time this year with SU1. It’s not ready for my ‘serious’ flying (waiting for my favourite third party GA aircraft to be officially compatible) so I jumped into a photographer activity and immediately ran into an issue as covered here.

2024 is not ready for my ‘proper’ simming.
2024 is not ready for World Photographer tasks.
2024 is not (was not?) ready for career mode.

I’m not sure what it is ready for, if even the basic gameplay features are so fundamentally broken. While these POI issues aren’t critical issues to most people (and are not to me), the overall quality of 2024 is abysmal so I’m staying away.

I found out that 2 points of interest were disabled, so make sure to enable them, maybe some of the missing POIs reported in that topic are part of WU2 & WU3.

Hi, thanks for sharing this idea.
However I have a vanilla FS2024 and never enabled or disabled anything there scenery-wise. Actually I don’t even know how to get to the screens you are showing.
Ah, wait, it’s hidden in the (yet to come) Marketplace … checking:
Indeed, you are right. There are these two disabled sceneries (or whatever these are). Now let me ask:

  • How/Why did these get disabled in the first place? I certainly wasn’t in this part of the UI ever before.
  • Does it only effect SU 1 beta testers?
  • Is this supposed to be the final solution Asobo expects every player to do or will there be an official fix?
  • Why does the UI show me “9/9” if actually one of the 9 is disabled? Just to fool me once again and make me expand every single collection to check it’s complete?

Anyway, thanks a lot @DementedCorn327. I consider this a workaround, but not a solution.

Yay, rocks and bridges are back :tada:

All are good questions but unfortunately I don’t have the answers at that point. Some of them have been raised with the CMs so hopefully there will be some communication around that. Great that for now the workaround allows to activate some of the POIs and with that users can complete some of the missions.

I marked the workaround as “solution” since I now don’t expect any further feedback or fix for this. This way the workaround is easier to spot, at least.

Kicker rock missing, unable to do the photo mission

I dont think a workaround qualifies as a fix. Those POIs should not be disabled by default
