Worth it? Vive Pro to Reverb G2

I have a Vive Pro (Gen1) with gear2 lens mod
And my 12700k@5.2/32gb ddr5 @5200/nvme/3090 drives it along reasonably well (I lock fps to 30. 100taa/100steam most things ultra)

But the screendoor on the Vive Pro can be a bit annoying.

I’m mostly concerned that
1/ I’ll have performance issues, will have to run below native resolution in the G2
2/ About moving away from OLED to LCD

Has anyone here upgrade from VP1 to a Reverb G2?
If so how did you find it?

I went from Vive Pro (original lenses) to Reverb G2 a year ago.
Visuals are much clearer and almost no screendoor effect comparing to Vive Pro.
A bit smaller FOV and sweet spot were not deal breaker for me.
I run mix of medium-high-ultra settings (ultra mostly for textures related) 90taa/100oxr with 30fps lock, disabled reprojection.

Would you say the switch was worthwhile?

I would think if you can afford that PC then a $600 G2 is definitely worth it.

Thanks for the feedback on VP to G2.
I must admit I am still a bit concerned it’s going to be an underwhelming upgrade?

So Cons seem to be:
Less fov, less sweetspot, back to fresnel lenses & god rays, back to LCD from OLED, can’t run at native resolution even with a 3090

And pro seems to be:
Comfy to wear, no screen door/better clarity

Am I being too negative and the G2 is going to blow me away resolution/clarity wise?

If arpara 5k didn’t have this “brightness” issues in reviews that would be a v tempting choice at the mo.
When will VR headsets stop being a bunch of compromises!?

The Reverb G2 offers a much higher clarity and is preferable even to a Vive Pro 2 in this respect.

The disadvantages (less FOV, smaller sweet spot) are absolutely bearable.
For the former, there are very good custom Facemask 3d models. Example
Or if possible try ordering the newer Reverb G2 model with larger FOV. Review

God Rays are hardly present and whether LCD or OLED is probably more a question of the current headset generations. In view of the image sharpness and general immersion with the Reverb G2, this is a negligible problem.

In addition, the G2 seems to be best supported by MSFS2020 of all VR headsets, which in turn enables optimal utilization of the (very expensive) hardware.

A G2 in combination with an RTX3090 is certainly an optimal starting position. At native resolution with average settings, clear weather, 40 fps should not be a problem. With RTX3030 & 12900K, OpenXR Toolkit, optimized settings and CPU & GPU OC, 50 fps is also possible. Or with 12700K probably 49.5 fps.

Have a good flight!

Agree with above comment.

I played a lot of Elite Dangerous both in Vive Pro and G2. Black is not so black in G2 with LCD, but still it is good and not washed grey, brightness is high, God Rays are almost absent.

I can run it in native resolution in MSFS 100oxr/100taa with medium-high settings with 25 (New York) - 35+ (bush trips) fps (RTX3090). With 100oxr/90taa I get more stable 30+ fps. Depending on what you fly and your requirements you can get even more fps with 80oxr/100taa or 100oxr/80taa, or look at OpenXR Toolkit with its options for NIS, FSR, and sharpening.

For me the only real cons was initial issue with usb connection on AMD motherboards, but that was resolved.

Thanks again for the help all - that was the push my wallet didn’t need :sunglasses:

I have an HP Reverb G2 and I have had Headset Cable issues from day 1. On 2 occasions, HP replaced my defective Cable free of charge! The 12 month warranty on my headset expired last week and unfortunately the last replacement Cable stopped rendering video a couple days ago. After days of extensive troubleshooting and software configuration changes, HP’s recommendation was to purchase a new Cable in this case which I’ve seen advertised for $150.00 USD. Before purchasing a HP Reverb G2, my advise is to research the HP Reverb G2 Blackout issue which is directly associated to defective Cables. You’ll find that HP has come out with a new and improved Cable which is supposed to address the Headset’s Blackout problems although, I can report that I received one of the new and improved Cables a few months ago and it has also become defective after roughly 200 hours of use. On the bright side, I really enjoyed the HP Reverb G2 when it worked.

A bit off subject but I have found that a few well placed zip ties have solved the blackout issue for me. I have zipped tied my cable to the head strap with a “strain” relief loop just before it plugs into the headset as it seems more of a plug issue than a cable issue. since relieving the stress off of the connection into the head set I have had no issue.

NineLives, great tip on the zip ties, I use them also. First it was because the bracket that held the cable to the Headset would fail after 5 minutes each go, LOL. I finally said screw it and went with the zip ties in order to resolve that issue. Incidentally, I realized that the zip ties made a big difference as well with keeping a solid connection between the cable and Headset receptor. HP should just include a couple zip ties with their new Headsets rather than that ■■■■■■ Bracket and save the consumer $100.00 on each Headset.

I wouldnt do it.
I went the opposite way, from HP reverb G2 to Lens modded Vive pro.

Vive pro is better imo!

HP reverb colours feel washed out. Doesnt feel real. feels arcady. Night flighing is underwhelming.
Stick with thew vive pro. tweek some settings to ultra etc.

I have both the hp reverb and vive pro to choose from and always go back to vive pro.
Infact ill probably part with the G2 next week, i simply dont use it anymore since vive pro is so much more enjoable to fly with.

Where did you get your lens MOD? can you DM me a link… I have a Vive Pro in a box before I bought Index, then HP G2….

Think it was Etsy for the 3d printed holders and eBay to get a gear to rip apart for the lenses.

There used to be someone selling the whole lot ready to go.

The only tricky part of it is buying the right model of gear.

The install itself easy but recommend you buy a lens cleaning brush kit off eBay as dust on the screens is really annoying.

Haven’t got the G2 yet. Still enjoying the Vive Pro.

Watching the arpara 5k launch, they’ve supposedly got brighter screens coming too…

ofranice, thanks for the information. You really peaked my interest to give the Vive Pro another look. I have concerns that my current PC doesn’t have enough juice under the hood in order to reach the full experience from the Vive Pro. My PC specs are below, what do you think?

Intel Core i7-9700K
DDR4 18G
NVIDIA GeForce RTX2080S 8 GB
HDD 2TB
SSD 512GB (M-2PCIE)

I sent his version 4 file to a local print shop, then purchase a used gear VR headset from Facebook market place.

Vive pro OG requires less GPU than the reverb since its lower res.
If youre running reverb now then youll have more FPS with Vive pro OG.
Vive pro2 is another story and not oled screen so wouldnt recomend.
