Getting fully into flight sim and have got the basics down but there are a few things still playing on my mind.
flying ILS - before I start a flight I choose afr high or low altitudes depending on the distance, I also choose an ifr plan on the arrival and try to choose one that is going into the current headwind. I just wanted to know if this is typically right or if it is kind of cheating and that you should really get an ifr clearance on approach instead.
if I do get an ifr clearance on approach instead of loading it before I fly do I need to input this onto the computer ? For example if I request ifr and they give me the word and say transition it doesnt come onto my flight plan.
how to make a flight as realistic as possible ? If I simply start at a departure gate and start all my engines and sort the autopilot then taxi and takeoff then land with a ifr that was planned before departure is that as close as your gonna get or is there more I can do?
Start researching. What you’re asking for is all over the internet and is not something that can be simplified. Look up the the terms, and look up the procedures. That’s the only way you will learn to be as realistic as possible.
1 the Ifr oaci flight plan doesn’t includes SID and STAR for the departure with the ATIS you easily guess the rwy in use and thus the standard departure (SID) to use to join the first airway waypoint
For the arrival the same you will know according to the weather the rwy in use and according to it and to your heading which STAR to use so while in cruise you can modify the FPL in the FMS and or G1000
And then the approach
But don.t forget the ATC for any good reasons can always ask you an other option or better gives you vectors to join the localizer or the RNP approach
As above, Google is your friend and there is a ton of great info out there. Don’t forget to check out NASA website, honest! leaders in aeronautical information from basics to advanced and beyond.
Research IFR flight. I recommend using Simbrief the plan your flights, it will generate a route using SIDs and STARs. you can use the in-game flight planner as well if you select High Altitude airways. but it doesn’t give you fuel and payload calculations.
Thanks for the replies guys, just need to clarify at all times I meant to type ils and not ifr. I’ve searched about inputting ils into the system but cant find too much information on it or it just seems mega confusing
The instrument landing system requires the radio frequency of the ILS to be entered into the nav radio. In the big jets, if you have selected your arrival runway before departure, the frequency will be entered automatically. Transition is a term for the entry point to the standard terminal arrival route (star) which will take you to your selected runway.
No, it isn’t cheating. All pilots are always aware of the arrival weather forecast, and as such what runway will probably be in use. A lot of the time the arrival is pre-programmed into the FMC.
