Would Xbox Series S be good enough for MSFS2020?

I know it seems that this community to tailor towards PC, but I guess now that MSFS2020 is coming to Xbox, hopefully it’s ok to discuss it as well. If not, would appreciate pointers to where I can discuss this.

I’m in a bit of dilemma right now. I managed to snag Xbox Series X after trying for so many months (still waiting to be shipped), because I knew MSFS2020 is coming. But I’m only playing mostly on my 1080p TV, or maybe my 1440p monitor once in a while. Should I get Xbox Series S instead?

I’ve been reading the comparison and it seems that Series X is mostly targeted for 4k gaming, and for up to 1440p Series S would be enough.

However I know that even the high end PC is mostly struggling with the game. So I’m curious if Series X extra GPU power will help even I’m only playing mostly in 1080p.

I know none of us have the game right now on Xbox, but curious if anyone smarter than me can help explain based on the facts we have so far.

The comparison chart would say not to downgrade if you already have an X in possession. Just in terms of baseline capability (processing power) and native storage. Yes, you can always add on the latter, but not the former.

My absolute guess is that the S would be relatively fine for 1080p (or maybe 1440p) MSFS, considering that you’ll likely be CPU bound, and the CPU performance is similar between the two (3.8 vs 3.6 GHz, both 8 cores). Though it only has 10 GB RAM total (split between system RAM and VRAM) which is a bit worrying for a game basically based on having unique textures for every piece of ground.

However, if you’re going to use it for anything else than MSFS, the X will probably be a way better choice, especially in the future.

@Aeluwas Ah yeah, honestly I’m just planning to use it for MSFS. I’ve given up building a PC since I can’t get my hands on GPU at reasonable pricing. I just want to make sure that for 1080p if there’s going to be noticeable improvement comparing Series S to X.

@CasualClick Well, technically I’m still waiting for Series X to be shipped, and Series S is currently in stock everywhere (although who knows how long).

I’m just trying to decide if I should just get the Series S since it’s $200 cheaper, and most likely I won’t be using it for anything other than MSFS2020 on a 1080p TV (already have a PS5 for other gaming needs, blu ray, etc)

Yes, I think that because of the high price of graphics cards at the moment people might start buying consoles for gaming.

Well nobody’s knows yet, but looking at the specs I can’t imagine that the S will run MSFS in stable 30fps in FullHD. While they will optimize the code in the coming years, they will also be more and more features and picture modes that need additional power. So if MSFS runs OKish on the S now, it must be the same case in 2 yers from now while playing 3rd party airplanes and custom sceneries and what not.
