Xbox Series X 60+ FPS with HDMI 2.1 + VRR display?

Is the game running higher than 60fps? I have the Series X connected to a LG27GP950-B, and console settings are 4k/120fps. Enabling the FPS counter on the display shows the game fluctuating beyond 60fps at times. Is this accurate?

I remember that the consoles announcement was 4k and capped at 30 fps. I don’t have a fps counter on my 4k monitor to tell if I’m experiencing anything other than what has been claimed directly from the Devs. Interesting find I wonder who else has seen any fluctuations like yourself.

I’m sure digital foundry done a video on it and it goes above 60FPS

DF said in their video that even though it shows over 60 Hz the game isn’t actually running that fast. It’s below 60 at all times and the display shows higher numbers because of low framerate compenstation. This is where the display refresh twice or three times per actual real frame (you can see strobing if the display refreshes too slowly or it fluctuates too much), so the number on the display is 2-3x higher than the true in game frame rate.

I suppose it might be possible in some extremely simple areas to see a little over ~60 FPS, but DF confirmed their >60 FPS figures to be compenstated and not true, so it seems like it would be very rare if it does happen.

Something I have noticed on my OLED which has VRR, it stutters a lot if I enable VRR. It’s really not good with VRR enabled for me.

If I play on my other TV which doesn’t have VRR its so much better, no stuttering when panning around the cockpit.
