Xbox Series X review: AUScene Ballina Byron Gateway YBNA

Aircraft used: LVFR 320, AT7, PMDG 738
Live weather: on

DETAIL

A pretty detailed little airport, YBNA is your typical AUScene scenery. Texturing is good, rather than excellent, with a few details I’d expect to be high-res being a little on the low(er) side. However from the flightdeck of an aircraft you’re unlikely to notice.

The now obligatory VW Campervan is included, parked just outside the terminal, landside. The landside area is very good indeed, featuring modelled roads, static vehicles and all appropriate signage (which looks outstanding). There are some businesses on the road leading to the terminal (a brewery, a signmaker, a waste disposal facility) and they’ve been included too — though again, some of the texture work is a little low-res. The small FBO hangars are nicely modelled and apron ground clutter is decent. Ground textures are above average and really very well done — as is the whole airport’s terraforming. Outside the main airport boundary not much is modelled, however I suspect that’s the case in reality — the airport is out of town, in an area that looks like it’s covered with gumtrees.

PERFORMANCE

Below average, unfortunately. It black screens and subsequently CTDs with moderate provocation which, for a small airport with no terminal interior and some quite low-res textures, isn’t what Xbox simmers should be experiencing. AUScene really need to revisit this airport and give it an optimisation update. Successful flights are possible with care but I’m really not into constantly looking over my shoulder in case something goes wrong…

VERDICT

An aesthetically pleasing airport, although not one that will set the MSFS world on fire in 2023. Some of the terminal’s most prominent textures should really be a little crisper and with its current level of stability I’d at least want a terminal interior.

I’m lukewarm to this scenery but I can’t say I regret buying it as it was a necessary addition to help complete my Oz airports collection. Stay in the cockpit, or use exterior view sparingly, and it’s all good. But if I’m completely honest a bit of drone use shouldn’t be troubling an airport of this size/complexity.
