Xbox Series X review: FlyTampa's Copenhagen Kastrup EKCH

Aircraft used: default and LVFR 320s
Live weather: on

With this currently being on sale following the release of the new World Update yesterday, I thought I’d give it a go (since it’s been languishing on my wishlist for a while).

DETAIL

Typical FlyTampa quality. Great textures, both buildings and airside ground, with many looking a hair sharper to me than in other FT products. It looks like there’s some custom ortho too. Scandinavian airports have a certain look to them and FT have captured the flavour nicely, with the trussed floodlights and unusual, blocky-looking jetways. The jetways have a worn look to them, feature white seals around the edges of the hoods and fit aircraft really snugly. There is a partial terminal interior and although pretty basic — and a bit dingy — it does look marginally better than some of their other airports. Unlike those other airports, however, there are no passengers, static or animated.

There are a good number of hangars and buildings dotted across the airfield but I’m a little disappointed they’ve not included the famous Flyvergrillen, a snack bar popular with aviation enthusiasts for its terrace overlooking one of the runways.

Ground textures landside are default affairs and I’ve complained about them in my other reviews of FlyTampa stuff. Some of them don’t look quite as bad here and I guess FT do it this way to bolster good performance/stability. However it’s not like I didn’t expect it when I handed my money over this morning…

The ground clutter is excellent and features lots of custom vehicles, including (but not limited to) a variety of SAS trucks and vans and some nice yellow ‘CPH’ passenger transfer buses.

PERFORMANCE

This becomes the second FlyTampa airport (following KBOS) I’ve found to be 100% stable and FPS performance is excellent too. I had the drone out multiple times earlier and each time I returned to the flightdeck, all screens were still on. I even went as far as trying to trigger black screens and a CTD but it was having none of it! Sim how you like here, it ain’t gonna fail you!

VERDICT

EKCH is what I’ve come to expect from FlyTampa and actually exceeds my expectations in the stability and performance departments. It’s not the most detailed airport ever but there’s certainly enough to make it look really pretty and a bonus is that LVFR’s statics pack works VERY well with it.

It feels very much like your typical Scandinavian airport and the custom ground clutter and vehicles really add to the immersion. Its value was significantly increased yesterday with the release of World Update XV, which of course includes the city of Copenhagen — and the city being so close to the airport makes approaches from the west that bit more interesting. Approach from the east and you’ll get a great view of the Oresund Bridge (although I’m not sure if FT modelled that or whether it was included in World Update XV).

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that this airport is another that benefits from Seafront Simulations’ Global Shipping — I made an approach to runway 30 earlier and it was superb to see a huge Maersk Lines cargo vessel just a couple of hundred feet below me, realistically churning out smoke and cutting a wake through the choppy waters!

Just wanting to throw this out there - your KBOS review made me purchase it and I wasn’t disappointed, runs great.

With Copenhagen, I’ve had for a while and it performed well even this time last year, did black screen now and then however, but never a CTD. Great to hear it now seems to be working fine like Boston. I had it uninstalled, I’ve reinstalled it and had a look about - seems great now.

This made me take a chance on the FlyTampa Vegas pack… hesitant originally as I remember a lot of bad feedback on CTD’s and performance on Xbox, but I’ve managed a couple of flights in the past few days, including taking the drone out and ‘trying to push it’ - even so, perfect performance and not one issue so far with Vegas either.

Hoping this now means that all FlyTampa sceneries should be fine on Xbox X :crossed_fingers:

Thanks for this review most of the airports I purchase are based on your reviews as I don’t have a lot of spare cash to spend on msfs so have to pick my airports carefully this one I’m going to get to go along with the updated Nordic scenery my aircraft of choice is the 737-800 so building up a few routes for jet2,Norwegian airway and Ryan air so will look to get a couple of more Nordic airports.

Great to hear positive things about KLAS — it’s the only FT airport I don’t have and, like you, I’ve been very hesitant based on the earlier CTD reports. I did hear it ran well if either the airport or the city was uninstalled — I take it you’ve tested the full package?

SU13 seems to have worked wonders for Xbox stability. I can live with the stuttering it’s introduced at times, if it means more airports will be fine in future. Besides, I’m hoping SU14 will fix anything SU13 broke!

I had heard this as well, but would have been happy if even just the airport worked, so still went ahead and bought the pack.

Installed just the airport first to test it, all was fine, then installed the city pack as well and… no difference. Excellent frames, no CTD or black screens, even when our with the drone for extended periods away from the airport. Completed flights both departing and arriving at Vegas, again no issues so far.

One issue with the ILS for 01L where neither localizer or GS seems to be there when on frequency, but that’s about it.

I have KLAS as well with the city scenery and I generally have few problems other than some frame dips on Xbox Series X. I don’t do a ton of drone cam stuff though; I think instability shows up more if you do.

Let’s face it, the drone is a bit gimmicky but it’s a tool we all like to play with sometimes - particularly to explore new airports and/or cities. I can live with scenery not playing nice with the drone, as long as it’s mostly fine with a multitude of regular external views.

KLAS is now back on my radar… and I reckon we’re due quite a sale within the next two weeks!
