DETAIL
As with all Impulse’s airports the detail is excellent. Lovely little terminal building (with superb interior), good (rather than outstanding) apron/taxiway/runway textures, and a well-modelled landside with custom road network. The terminal interior has some really nice details, such as full body scanner at security and animated luggage carousel in arrivals. Landside we see custom taxis (i.e. real-life local companies), in high-res, and some very realistic-looking custom vegetation. Static people have been included but only inside.
Impulse have modelled quite a bit around the airport, particularly at the runway 21 end (see images below).
PERFORMANCE
For an airport of this size, stability is pretty bad. There is some good surrounding detail for the Xbox to contend with but other devs have managed to cram a similar amount of detail into a similar area, without massively affecting stability. Framerates are absolutely fine but Impulse really need to work on their optimisation (it’s not the first product of theirs I’ve had stability issues with on Xbox).
It’s not that I can’t fly in and out of here without problems — it’s that I shouldn’t really expect to have to take care at such a tiny airport! Orbx’s Mackay and Rockhampton are larger airports and both perform much better than Coffs on console.
VERDICT
A nice airport with some decent surrounding detail to spice up the RWY21 approach — in a very scenic part of New South Wales. It’s a shame we don’t have a Dash 8 in the sim (the one in the screenshots is included with the scenery) as this airport sees the type regularly, however the place is capable of handling aircraft of 737/320 size.
Unfortunately the poor stability relative to the airport’s size is disappointing. As long as I don’t use drone or exterior views too much I can land and take off multiple times but I’d much prefer to enjoy this scenery without having to constantly worry about whether my flight is going to be prematurely curtailed by black screens or a CTD.
Impulse’s own YPAD and YSCB perform no worse and they’re far bigger hubs!
