Xbox users only - black screen / ctd discussion

I know that but I get so frustrated that I plan to fly a plane and as soon as I press the fly button
and the SIM crashes or I get further on the runway and see the aircraft has black screen most of the time. I’ll take that chance now and hope 2024 will be fine, let’s hope.

To be fair, on my XBX, I’ve had very little experience of CTDs or ABOs. Recently I’ve spent time gliding in the Geneva area, low level in the JF Hawk through Switzerland and taking the Ini A320 around Germany & Austria without major issues.

I’ve noticed that time compression does seem to cause issues on occasion (I’ve seen the A320 really struggle with LNAV when using it which may due to the XB getting stressed).

Ive used a PC for flightsim since 80s.
I bought a Xbox S 18 months ago for ease of transport to take with me to a Flight sim club 1/month. Its fine for this but the memory issue completely rules it out for complex aircraft and scenery. If you want to use these, forget it.
Using a PC for MSFS2020 - yes there will still be some issues, even using my top end system. But a Xbox S doesnt even compare with a PC. Not used a X Box X, but reading the forums this is at best marginally better. Will they sort it out in MSFS 2024? No idea.
If you can afford a PC Id get one.

Series X is more than marginally better than Series S, especially if one has the extra 1TB card onboard. That said, not all PCs are better than a Series X, however; so one would have to spend quite a bit to improve significantly upon a Series X.

Apologies.I should have added my Xbox S has 1TB.
Your right good PCs are not cheap. However my very very (11 yr) older GTX1060/6GB/i7 4077/16gb PC - which i was running 3 months ago - had no No CTDs/ Black screens of Xbox X/S. My new RTX 4090 is obviously on a different planet - as it should be for the cost.

I always had a PC for MSFS and Xplane 10 but not with this model MSFS 2020 until it came on Xbox. So I’m getting a lot of black Avionics initially but now with so many updates I was getting problems with the big aircraft immediately returning to the the Xbox main menu. As I mentioned MSFS have advised me it was a resource problem with the Xbox but in the future things will get better with an update??? The Xbox was stop gap before returning to PC. I think with 2024 coming in November it will be the right time to swap the Xbox S and return to PC again. I know pc has it’s own problems too but I know it will be better experience for me to return to what I was use too.

Don’t get me wrong the Xbox S/X are a game changer for gaming and the MSFS 2020 is so beautiful but I chose XBox S when it first came out because my PC was nearly full and getting on, too old for the new technology. And then it got bigger and bigger then my Xbox S was struggling with all the lovely scenery in the SIM then the planes, it started to get problems. I uninstalled a lot of world updates and planes plus their liveries and I had over a 1TB storage still empty after I bought an expansion card. But I was still getting avionics going black on big and small aircraft like the Cessa Caravan. I initially I thought bit was a Gamin problem but the A320 neo was going black too, and as you said I started to fly smaller planes with the old glass gauge and had no problems. One thing, the ATR I’m flying with the modern screens is a problem. I fly this now all the time having no problems with Xbox S.

Sorry ATR isn’t a Problem it works fine.

The jump to PC introduces a new set of problems that CAN be a bit of a nightmare, particularly for anyone a bit wet behind the ears when it comes to computing. I have seen reports of in-game CTDs on PC but this isn’t too surprising, since no two machines are exactly alike. I, however, have yet to have a CTD while flying… and I’ve been on PC since the end of Feb, doing on average around 5hrs a day. So if the sole aim is to eliminate CTDs, then PC is certainly the solution. Maybe the fact that I only use my PC for MSFS (nothing else installed, except a few bits essential for running the sim) helps enormously?

I have noticed more WASM failures on PC (when the yoke locks hard over and all screens are blank) than Xbox. But a simple flight restart is all it takes to resolve them.

I still think the Xbox handles MSFS (memory issues aside) remarkably — certainly in a manner akin to a fairly high-end PC. I’ve been lucky enough to compare the two, side-by-side, and while some differences are quite pronounced, others are far more nuanced. What I thought would be better, isn’t; and what I didn’t think wold be better… is! Fundamentally, it looks and plays identically on both platforms.

Just had my first CTD in a while, I was about to do a flight from WSSS to VHHH in the LVFR A330neo, started up normally, used EFB ground services (catering, luggage, jetway), taxi to runway 02C aaaand CTD, what makes it really weird for me is that I’ve used more complex planes recently without any kind of problem (PMDG 777, 737, iniBuilds A320neo & A310)

I understand you are going to PC.

But i like to know as much detail about the console as i can get.

The fact Microsoft replied regarding resources is goos news.

Thank you for your time.

Same it doesn’t happen with planes you buy I think

One thing I was told by developers about black screens in xbox. Scenery Overlays are a big cause of these. For example weather programmes, tools/utilities adding to scenery ( flow is an example) , enhanced scenery. Uninstalling these will increase chance of reducing black screens. I wouldnt even consider getting an xbox s to anyone looking at a console - if yiu want to fly aircraft with screens. Got to be an X box X minimum .

The Series S is where most of the problem start. Series X isn’t a high end PC, but it’s very powerful for a console. Series S is more designed for the pickup and play gamer so it just doesn’t have the power to make a powerful game/sim like MSFS work properly.

Hi , it’s a XBox S about 2 years old I have the normal storage for the console with two other games on it other than MSFS 2020. I have a 1 TB WD_black expansion card fitted. MSFS is directed to the 1 TB drive. The other two games are on the Xbox S main drive . I have hotas one Thrustmaster throttle and stick. The MSFS is up to date 1.37.19.0. The internal storage used is 48.5% with 187.4 GB free. The storage expansion card 25.6% used with 684.7 GB free. The monitor is a TV . I hope that helps ? Regards.
